From the moment you're inside, it's obvious that the Deer Mountain Lodge would offer a singular experience. The hosts and owners, Khristine and Jameson, were endearingly welcoming and always eager to assist their guests whether it was for advice on best routes to find moose or places in this North Woods outpost for delectable dinners. And speaking of delectable, breakfast at the Deer Mountain Lodge features eggs from Khristines nurtured, free-range chickens and maple syrup from her relatives to slather atip her tasty, homemade pancakes. Jameson cooks scrumptious breakfasts on the weekends and offers outdoors advice to both hunters and nature lovers alike. These two have renovated this old house with exquisite rustic, homemade furniture and each room has a special decor from the Winter Room, featuring old snowshoes, ice skates and cross country skis, to the Hunter's Room, adorned with red flannel and a stuffed owl. And, may I point out, the owl is one of many critters at the Lodge, including deer hunted by Jameson, and a fisher, a bobcat--even a bear cub, that was preserved after it was struck and killed by a car. A remote but cozy outpost for an adventurous sojourn.

This was a perfect place to stay for a night before a day of skiing. We arrived and were made to feel at home. The room was clean, comfortable and extremely cozy.
