Once the location of a Maori Pa, Moeraki has been a popular site for its abundant seafood. With the arrival of Europeans it became a whaling village and was initially believed it could become the main port for North Otago. A railway line was put in but due to the instability of the land was quickly abandoned. The millennium track follows the route of the railway with informative plaques along the way to read.
These days Moeraki is a sleepy fishing village. There are a couple of commercial fishermen still operating who primarily catch Blue Cod and Crayfish. With a population of approximately 100 people the majority of the homes are holiday homes.
A drive to the Lighthouse will lead you to a walk onto the Katiki Point the largest breeding colony on the Mainland for Hoiho (Yellow Eyed Penguin). With patience you may see them arriving or departing for their daily fishing sojourns. The peninsular is also a popular spot for fur seals - but don't approach them as they can be pretty quick over a short distance and their bite is worse than their bark!
Alternatively you can walk along Koekohe beach to the Moeraki Boulders (or drive if walking isn't your thing) and view these bizarre geological formations - make sure you check the tide as they are best viewed at low tide.
The harbour also has a beautiful swimming beach, as this is in the harbour you can be guaranteed to be able to access the water at all tides.
If fishing is your thing you can bring your boat as there is a ramp available to use (for a charge) or you can book onto one of the charter boats and be pretty much guaranteed a feed of Blue Cod.
The Moeraki Tavern is a fabulous spot to sit back on the deck and enjoy the harbour views with a cold drink, hot coffee or a meal. They also offer takeaway food and drinks. Also on the weekends the Fishwife operates from beside the wharf selling fish and chips, crayfish and the odd bit of baking.
