Old town of Colmar (Old Colmar) Excursions
The self-proclaimed capital of the Alsace wine region, Colmar is an undeniable highlight of the famous Alsace Wine Route and renowned for its beautifully preserved medieval centre. The old town of Colmar (Old Colmar) is worthy of a postcard from all angles, with its half-timbered buildings painted in a rainbowin the sky of colours, fishing boats floating along the canals lined with flowers and a labyrinth of cobbled alleys dotted with small cafes and artisan shops.
The compact center of the old town of Colmar makes it feel more like a village than a city, and the main sights can be easily explored on foot, including architectural gems such as the spectacular Maison des Tetes, the 16th century Pfister House. (Pfister House) and the church of St Martin in pink sandstone. Other highlights of Colmar include the 16th-century Issenheim altarpiece by Mathias Grünewald, on display at the Unterlinden Museum; the Bartholdi Museum, dedicated to the Colmar-born architect (best known for the design of the Statue of Liberty); and the aptly named Little Venice (Little Venice), where visitors can enjoy a boat trip around the picturesque canals.
The most atmospheric moments to visit Colmar are during the Wine Fair which is held every summer or during the annual Christmas market when the whole city comes alive with festivities.
