A completely unique experience, the Art Hostel offers the opportunity to sleep inside the creative imagination of artists, in the heart of Leeds. With no two rooms the same, guests have a catalogue of artistic installations to choose from. As a social enterprise for East Street Arts, the Art Hostel helps build financial sustainability for the charity. A creative, comfortable, vibrant and fun place to stay, the Art Hostel is the perfect place to explore the very best of Leeds. The Ocean Galaxy room is based around a galaxy of suspended footballs, giving the impression that the guests themselves are part of a unique solar system. The footballs are in fact marine plastic pollution, a total of 992 marine debris balls recovered from the world’s oceans in just 4 months. 769 footballs from 41 different countries and islands and from 144 different beaches, by 89 members of the public. In addition a never-seen-before framed print of a marine debris Leeds United football shirt (replica 1978) found washed up on the East Coast of the UK in 2015, hangs on the wall. Mandy Barker is an international award-winning photographic artist whose work involving marine plastic debris over the past 10 years has received global recognition. Working with scientists, she aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the world’s oceans whilst highlighting the harmful effect on marine life and ultimately ourselves.

Parking is available close by: the Shannon Street or Marsh Lane car parks are local, secure and reasonably priced (or check the Parkopedia website for even cheaper deals).

Welcome to the Art Hostel – a unique hospitality experience and the first of its kind in the UK, providing affordable & original accommodation created by artists. And as a social enterprise for East Street Arts, all of our profits are reinvested into the arts community in a direct and meaningful way. Developed by contemporary art charity, East Street Arts, which has supported artists internationally for nearly 30 years. Embracing a more welcoming method of hosting, we help visitors to the city of Leeds interact with grassroots arts, music & events, sharing our favourite independent eateries, shops, bars and businesses. We provide the physical infrastructure for you to get involved: to make, create, debate, sleep and explore, introducing guests to new and established cultural destinations. We opened our initial temporary pilot hostel on Kirkgate in Leeds city centre back in 2016. This hostel was extremely successful, hosting more than 10,000 guests from more than 115 countries in two and a half years. The Kirkgate hostel closed its doors at the end of 2018 and we have since developed a brand new, larger-scale permanent Art Hostel in Mabgate, Leeds. Part of our creative Mabgate Complex, the new Art Hostel will be situated next door to East Street Arts HQ, Patrick Studios and art and tech hub, Convention House. Designed and created by a new raft of artistic talent, it’s a fantastic spot for unique, affordable accommodation in Leeds. (East Street Arts – registered charity number 1077401)
