When you enter the area around Lougheraherk you feel that you are entering a part of Ireland which you thought had disappeared forever. From the Schoolhouse only one new home can be seen and the original homes have existed for centuries. Farming continues as in the past with haystacks still in evidence. A few cows are kept as in the past to provide milk and now instead of the original homemade butter, this commodity is bought in the nearby village of Glencolumbkille, known as Glen locally. Hens and ducks are kept but your most frequent company will be the mountain sheep. When the school opened in 1890, there were around 50 children who filled the 2 classrooms. The younger children from 4 years up to 7 years were taught by the schoolmistress in the lower classroom with its black stove feed by turf. The master taught the older children in the upper classroom with its open fireplace and large master's press both of which still remain in the school as does the master's leather covered chair with the old blackboard and original pre-partition map of Ireland on the dining room wall.
Each child brought a sod of turf to feed both fires. As numbers decreased in the valley, due mainly to immigration, pupils had to bring 2 sods of turf. The school closed in the 1950's, becoming a weaving shed and community meeting place when the new school opened in the village of Glen. In 1968 the school was bought by the present owners, two young artists and the outbuildings were developed into an open airy studio, situated behind the school which is now a 2 bedroom, large openplan kitchen, living area, shower room and conservatory. This can be booked for extra guests and art residencies are planned for the summer months.

Parking inside the school gates, accomodates 3 cars with extra spaces off the road outside. The roads are narrow in this area but you will not meet any tour buses. Killybegs is a half an hour's drive away and Donegal Town is an hour's drive away. Carrick is about 20 minutes away, with Teelin and Kilcar a little further. The sea cliffs at Slieve Liag, which are the highest sea cliffs in Europe, are easily accessible with parking at the site and the Rusty Mackeral worth a visit for food and drinks. Taking a boat from Teelin for a sea trip around the bottom of the cliffs is memorable. A day spent climbing the hill to Glenlough and exploring the area of Port is unique.
It is possible to catch a bus directly from Dublin airport to Donegal Town and then by Local link to Glencolumbkille itself with a taxi for the last 10 kms but it is best to hire a car to explore this area. Coming from Belfast, you can take several routes, driving to Omagh and then to Donegal Town and onto Ardara, through the spectacular valley of Glengesh and then following the road to Port. Lougheraherk Schoolhouse is on your left across the lake. Another lovely route is from the Schoolhouse down Cranny Glen and to the caves at Maghera and its wide expanse of beach and the waterfall at Laconnell.
