Historic Pavitt Cottage is one of the oldest houses in New Zealand. Beautifully restored, it retains all of its historic charm and character combined with some modern conveniences , offering you a unique heritage experience in quiet and charming Robinsons Bay. It is a special find, just 10 minutes drive from Akaroa town. Pavitt Cottage dates from the 1850s, and has a fascinating history. Built by the owners of the first Sawmill in Canterbury, it was fully renovated in the early 2000's by one of their descendants. The renovation has been beautifully done - all in keeping with the historic feel, but providing the necessaries of modern life for your stay. The cottage has a lovely welcoming atmosphere. There are two queen bedrooms, one of which also has a single bed in it. The main lounge includes the dining table and spacious comfortable seating plus games and books and is heated by an efficient gas heater. The smaller parlour provides an alternative place to relax and is very quaint with a gas-powered fireplace. The kitchen includes a modern (but historic looking) gas stove and fridge. The bathroom is very cool with its timber sink, claw foot bath with shower, and Edina - the amazing pull chain toilet. There is also another toilet outside - which comes in handy if the bathroom is occupied. Upstairs are two attic rooms reached by a steep staircase - very quaint and there for you to enjoy. These rooms are not normally used as bedrooms, but can be available on request. There is a washing machine plus some outdoor pop-up furniture for your use in the shed outside.
Our stay was great from start to finish. Fell in love with the cottage and the surrounding countryside. Carol and Suky were very quick to respond. Absolutely faultless. The glorious weather was just the icing on the cake. Would definitely love to come back and soon!
The cottage exceeded our expectations in that it was spotlessly clean, welcoming and warm, oozing historical interest and in a lovely location. I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone to stay and enjoy.
A taonga treasure of a place. So clearly and thoughtfully cared for by the Trust, descendants and community. Wonderful to be part of such a strong connection back to early colonial history - with all that we needed for modem day comfort! Thank you, thank you, thank you b
Beautiful place to relax and the history of this beautiful cottage. We didn't want to leave. Bought back alot of memories for Dad from the UK. Will come again next year for sure.

Our co-host Carol Osgood will be your primary contact. About me- I fell in love with Akaroa over 30 years ago - the first time I drove over Hilltop. I've lived in Robinsons Bay since then, enjoying the heritage, beautiful scenery and many walks in the area. Now retired its a privilege to be involved with a community group managing and looking after the very special Pavitt Cottage.
