Karine and her family were so warm and welcoming! We felt very special as we were the only guests on our first night, and they opened up the restaurant and cooked wonderful local cuisine just for us. We also really enjoyed the family atmosphere of Palo Seco, centered around the pier and the local fishing cooperative. Everyone would come down to the pier to watch the sunset, and swim off the end of the pier, or help bring in the day’s catch from the boats. It was really refreshing to be in a place where the locals were able to still be themselves; they welcomed us as friends. So different from the jaded attitude you find in towns that have lost their soul to tourism. The little hotel (6 rooms) was newly refurbished, extremely clean and beautiful. Aside from the fishing cooperative and a small tienda with limited hours, there is nothing else in Palo Seco but a few homes further up the hill from the pier. So if you want food, you have to eat at the restaurant, or drive back to Mariato.
