WALKING, WALKING and more WALKING!
The towns, villages and dales of County Durham are great for an amble, a ramble or a challenging hike: there's something for everyone. You could start off with a wander around Barnard Castle itself, discovering some of the town’s history via the ‘Barnard Castle Yards’ route map - 1 hour, 1.7 miles.
Move on to Flatts Wood and Percy Beck, two short circular walks in Barney: The King’s Walk takes about 45 mins (0.7 miles) while The Cleveland Walk is a bit longer at one mile.
Then check out the ‘The Walking in Teesdale Series’ - twelve walks stretching further afield - along river, up valley, down dale, and across the moors – including the riverbank in front of the cottage!

ON FOOT
Barnard Castle is a small, compact market town so nothing is too far from anywhere. That means all the shops, eateries and attractions of the town – and many wonderful riverside walks - are within easy walking distance of the cottage.
BUS
Regular bus services between Barnard Castle and Darlington are provided by two bus companies: Arriva North East and Weardale Travel (formerly Scarlet Band). Timetables are available in the cottage.
The nearest bus stops for the above services are on Galgate (A67) – either outside the Commercial Hotel (near the Post Office) or on the opposite side of the road at Galgate Stand B or C (check the above-mentioned schedules for details).
PARKING IN TOWN:
There is free on-road parking on the cobbles along Market Place and on Galgate. Bear in mind, however, that there is a two-hour limit.
There are also council car parks on Newgate and outside Morrisons on Galgate. Both incur parking charges.
TAXI
Local services include: ACE Taxis, Alan’s Taxi and Andrew’s Taxi (wheelchair access available). Contact details for all these services are provided in the Guest Manual.
RAIL
Although Barnard Castle does not have its own railway station, the neighbouring town of Darlington is one of the stops on the East Coast Main Line so is a great way of getting to the area. It is served by several train operators including LNER, First TransPennine Express, CrossCountry and Northern Rail, and provides direct and frequent train services to London, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Durham, York, Leeds and Manchester as well as the Tees Valley.
AIR
Newcastle (NCL) is the largest international airport serving County Durham. Located about 35.5 miles north of Barnard Castle, it offers a range of short-haul flights across Europe and excellent rail and car hire options for onward travel.
Other airports to consider include Teesside International Airport (MME) near Darlington and Leeds Bradford Airport. The former has a limited choice of scheduled flights while the latter involves a longer journey to Barnard Castle.
Manchester and Edinburgh have excellent rail links to Darlington and both have international airports serving direct flights to long-haul destinations.
