In a world of its own, this charming guesthouse is just 35 minutes from Wellington, by car or ferry, nestled into a native bush hillside, and overlooking Wellington Harbour. It occupies the ground floor of a mid-century house designed by the modernist architect Bill Toomath. It sits high above the road: to access, there is a well-kept path through the bush, or you can take a private cable car - one of the first constructed in Wellington! The amenities of Days Bay are a five-minute stroll away. The living room is a comfortable multi-purpose place - a living area and kitchen, that can easily double up as a workspace. There’s good high-speed wifi, and a table with a view that you can work at. The spiral staircase in the living room is closed at the top! 🙂 The bedroom is spacious, with plenty of storage room. There’s a new king size bed - sitting in bed, you can look out over the bay! The patio has good privacy - it’s not overlooked. There are two outdoor chairs, and a little table. You’ll hear lots of birds, especially at dawn and dusk - tūī and grey warblers (riroriro) are the noisiest! At night, you may hear a ruru (morepork owl), which has a distinctive ‘whoo whoo’ call.
A lovely place to stay - even in less than lovely weather! Far enough away from the main drag to feel private, surrounded by bush and 5-10 minutes' walk from the beach. Hosts were friendly and communicative (and the cable car up to the house is fun) - highly recommend!
Days Bay is a quiet and friendly place. A mixture of families and commuters during the week, and day visitors coming over for some time on the beach at the weekend.
Eastbourne is a little bigger, with more amenities (including a Four Square supermarket), but a similar relaxed vibe. It has a butcher, a baker and a fruit and veg shop, which are all worth visiting.. and a great French cafe bistro called Tartines.
Petone, halfway along the road to Wellington, is a busy little urban hub, with a multicultural vibe - we love the Indian and Chinese supermarkets and restaurants.
A little North of Petone is Lower Hutt, which is more of an urban centre. There’s a useful shopping centre there - also a great farmer’s market on Saurrdays (the Riverbank Market).
From Wellington, you can get to Days Bay by bus, or by ferry. The ferry doesn’t run if the weather is bad, but the bus always goes! The bus also runs through Days Bay to Eastbourne, which is a 15 minute walk from Days Bay pier.

I'm a professor at Victoria University of Wellington. I work on AI: mostly on how to keep it safe. I'm a newcomer in Wellington: I spent 24 years at Otago, where me and my wife Mele worked and had a family. I love New Zealand. I also love travel.. we have taken time out to live in Italy (Trieste) and the Basque Country (San Sebastian) as well as the UK and Tonga to visit family. Other things I love: jazz, sailing, poetry, Belgian beer.
