Ethel's Barn (sleeps 2-4 plus a baby) and sits alongside our own home in an acre of garden, woodland and stretch of the River Greta hidden just 5 minutes walk from the centre of Keswick market square. The barn is 200 years old and has been traditionally renovated with a double bedroom, living/dining room with double sofa bed, a little kitchen and a shower room. With a private courtyard, one private parking space and footpaths right from the door, Ethel's Barn is practically perfect in every way. Ethel's Barn is a homage to my granny, a housekeeper in big houses all her life who never got to own her own home. The barn is 200 years old and has been traditionally renovated with a double bedroom, living/dining room with a double sofa bed, little kitchen and a shower room. The double bedroom is a generous size with a queen sized bed fitted with a specially commissioned Herdwick wool 'Wool Room' mattress topped with scrumptious Wool Room pure wool mattress protector, goose down duvet, pillows and Egyptian cotton linen. The main living room has a comfy 3 seater John Lewis sofabed which converts easily into a small double, a Herdwick wool 'bodged' wood foot stool, Ethel's own oak dining table with seating for 4 and a wood burning stove for extra cosiness. Additional heating is from two electric ceramic wall mounted heaters. We also offer two ''Beds in a Bag' from the Futon Company for younger guests, they come with cosy fleece lined sleeping bag, pillows and crisp linen. We can also provide one travel cot. It'll be a bit of a 'squash and a squeeze' with the sofa bed, 2 futons AND the cot however, if you're happy so are we! The galley kitchen has a ceramic hob and electric oven, microwave etc, open shelves and a sink with a view towards the woodland. The large red Chinese amoire serves as a larder cupboard. The small, but perfectly formed shower-room has been recently fully renovated and has an electric shower. Although there is no lobby, we've added a large matted area to the front door area for you to have enough space to come in and get out of dripping wet walking boots and coats. There is internet access, a smart TV, a small library and plenty of board games and jigsaws. If you're brining children, do let us know their ages and we'll pop in some age appropriate toys and books as well. The courtyard end of the bedroom and living room are fitted with privacy blinds allowing you to see out, but preventing anyone looking in. PLEASE NOTE that guests requiring aircon can do this by opening the windows! We've included little bits of Ethel's own story in the building by using some of her own furniture as well as up-cycling her chest of drawers to craft skirting boards, the kitchen and bathroom shelves as well as creating a little herb garden in the courtyard where we know she would have loved to sit. In renovating the building we've stayed faithful to traditional building techniques, materials, the original vaulted ceilings and lime rendered walls, Victorian reclaimed floorboards and curious 'nooks,' all tell a little of the history of this 200 year old building. Any profit from the rental of Ethel's Barn supports 'The Living Project' which offers free or reduced cost professional counselling to those with PTSD. Activities in the Lakes can result in unexpected accidents so we highly recommend you travel with appropriate insurance that covers trips/slips/cancellations etc.
