The lodge was amazing! We didn’t see anyone else at all in the entire area, very private and relaxing. If you are looking to get away and enjoy peace and quiet with amazing views day and night(the stars) this is your place! I can’t wait to go back again ! I am from Montana and with all the tourists and people moving in, you don’t find places that truly give you your own space and solitude.
The Whynot Lodge is a semi-off-grid cabin and is very rustic and extremely secluded. Claire and I live on the top level of the cabin and you will be occupying the lower level which is a complete private en-suite. It is a log cabin on a cinder block foundation. electricity is provided by the Yellowtail Dam. We collect all of our water
off of our roof into a 2300-gallon rainwater catchment system, This water is processed by a 500,000-gallon water filtration system that ensures clean and potable water to the cabin. Because we collect all of our water, conservation is very important at The Whynot Lodge and strictly adhered to. We have fantastic cellular phone service (Verizon) and outstanding high-speed WIFI service provided by Starlink. Because of the rustic nature of our location, you can expect to experience a variety of wildlife and small woodland creatures. There is a plethora of birds and fowl to enjoy. Because we exist on the canyon bedrock you can expect a lot of loose gravel and tree branches when on foot. The weather is ever-changing, and being prepared for all conditions is a must. You may encounter rain storms, high winds, and temperatures that can breach 100 degrees in the summer months. Spring and fall are extremely pleasant. Because we are a working homestead you can expect it to look the part with building and farming materials on the property that are used to maintain the homestead. Insect repellants are provided to help keep the mosquitos and other creepy crawlers at bay. A variety of rodents roam the property and our barn cat Chloe does a decent job at keeping them at bay and rarely do we see evidence of them in the house. We do have two very friendly and loving German Shepherds that act as a very reliable predator warning system and will keep them away from the cabin. They will be very happy to join you on any walks or hikes if you would like.
You will be joining us atop the Bighorn Reservoir after traveling a seven-mile dirt road. This will require a 4WD or a UTV to cross the land. The 7-mile 2-track road is a private road that has "Zero Improvement" restrictions. The ride to your destination requires someone who is comfortable with driving a deeply rutted road in certain stretches, as well as sections of the road that are bedrock and covered with rock from break-down. When arriving you will be awe-struck with a world-class view and 10's of thousands of acres of undeveloped space.
Our location is not conducive to traveling long distances due to the complexity of our dirt road and the distance we are from the nearest town so planning on staying in or near the Fort Smith area would be recommended. Once here, enjoy the serenity and peace, go for a hike, go fishing, go boating, ride our ATV, enjoy any artistry such as photography or painting. Please don't forget to bring your own food as the nearest store is over an hour away and we provide a kitchenette with a full refrigerator in your private suite. We provide a light continental breakfast as well as coffee, tea, pre-packaged snacks, and condiments. Come and enjoy a unique experience with us.
The main mode of transportation is by foot, there is plenty of places to hike and visit. If you like spelunking you will be able to access caves with 7000-year-old petroglyphs. You can also drive back down and get your boat into the Bighorn Reservoir or the Bighorn River for world-class fishing and water sports
