Pippin barn is nestled in the village of Sparsholt, a short 3-mile drive from Winchester. The tiny but perfect village-run shop and post office has everything you need and more, from fresh fruit and vegetables to cakes and treats.
The Plough Pub is a little gem, just a two-minute walk from Pippin Barn. It has a roaring fire in winter and a beautiful, tranquil garden for summer. Food is home cooked and the Sunday lunch is delicious. Dogs are welcome.
A 10-minute stroll through the woods takes you to the stunning Lainston House hotel, dating from the 17th century. You have the choice of formal or relaxed dining, from the Avenue Restaurant, to the Wellhouse serving woodfired dishes. They also offer afternoon tea on the terrace with beautiful views. You can even brush up your cookery skills on a half or full day course. Regular special events include the Lainston outdoor cinema and opera nights in summer months. The hotel's kitchen garden is also regularly opened for charity - enjoy a coffee and tour.

Winchester's historic city centre is a 10-minute drive away. Explore the medieval streets of Winchester and admire the history of the Cathedral and Wolvesey Castle before strolling along the River Itchen. Evening entertainment includes the theatre, a gorgeous cinema (with wine and food brought to your seat) and vast range of eateries. You can also enjoy the regular farmers market. A winter must is the Christmas market - one of the best in the world.
Pippin Barn is in the perfect location for walkers - there are multiple routes from the front door. The New Forest is 30 minutes away and beautiful beaches are within an hour's drive - a firm favourite is Mudeford, near Christchurch. If you are looking for a challenge then try the 100 mile South Downs Way walk or simply enjoy the rolling hills and river valleys of South Downs National Park, just outside Winchester.
The ancient stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury are within an hour's drive. You can reach the historic cities of Oxford, Salisbury, Chichester and Bath for a day trip. Nearby stately homes including Montacute House and Mottisfont Abbey, as well as Jane Austen's home at Chawton. Highclere Castle, the location for the very popular TV drama Downton Abbey, is 25 minutes away.
For younger guests, Nelson's Flag Ship HMS Victory (1759), King Henry VIII's flag ship the Mary Rose and HMS Warrior are at the naval dockyard in Portsmouth - 45 mins away. Activities include a climbing wall, interactive area for children and a boat trip around Portsmouth harbour to see the warships.
Near Southampton, Go-Ape has zip-wires, rope bridges and tree-top walkways. If you like heights then you'll love it! Winchester Science Centre is an interactive technology centre, with an amazing planetarium. Paulton's Park, home to Peppa Pig World is 30-minutes away and Marwell Zoo is 25-minutes away.
