It is very efficient once up to preferred temperature, but it isn't instant. Each bedroom has its own thermostat, so everyone can be comfortable at their preferred sleeping temperature! The bathroom and the downstairs are on their own thermostat as well! As is the case with most mountain homes, this home does not have air conditioning. It does however stay cooler than most homes due to the lack of windows exposed to direct sunlight all through the day. The locals like to open up the windows at night to let in the cool air, usually in the 50's and 60's. There are also many fans throughout the house. This unit is an end unit of a 4 unit building, so there is a shared wall with one other unit. The bedrooms do not share a wall.
