In the night you will enjoy the club and restaurants of Korissia and the Vourkari's Marina.
Kea is a beautiful and quite unknown island, unspoiled by the mass tourism and not overcrowded. It is the nearest cycladic island from Athens.
The first restaurant and the first mini market are about 15 minutes drive from the house.
The village of Ioulis with its restaurants, shops and a supermarket nearby is about 25 minutes.
40 minutes from the house the small town of Korissia with its port offers many shops and restaurants. Good butchers, fishmongers, good bakeries, pastry shops, and supermarkets.
Vourkari’s marina also offers good restaurants, about 45 minutes from the house.

Kea is the closest island from Athens and its international airport, less than two hours.
It can be reached in one day in most cases.
You can reach the island with a ferry, only one hour far from the port of Lavrio.
You can get to the port of Lavrio directly from the International Athens Airport by bus (at least one hour), or taxi (approximately 30 mn).
A car is compulsory once on the island, the house is 40 min from the port of Korissia.
We recommend to get a 4WD for there are many dirt roads on your way to the nicest sandy beaches.
You can rent your car either at the airport or on the island but in this case we recommend early booking (the car rental is on the port of Korissia).
Around the house :
The environment around the house is beautiful and rare in the cyclades. The surroundings are calm, with only a few distant houses in the vicinity and the house overlooks the sea on a bay with a panoramic 180 degrees view. The first circle of the cyclades is visible in the distance, with, from left to right: Andros, Tinos, Giaros, Syros, and Kythnos.
Sykamia, one of the most charming sandy beaches on the island, is nearby.
Go for it! It is only 5 minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot. It is a must!
There is also a small, charming cove down a private access path in the property, what is even rarer, a small paradise …
The situation will give you the impression of being alone, with the sea just for yourself. That has become a rare and appreciated privilege in the mediterranean sea.
However this isolation is only relative, as the island has everything for you to have a great stay. There are many shops, restaurants, supermarkets, taxis, nautical activities, cultural visits, hiking trails, a pharmacy, a medical center and even a movie theater.
I now tell you the useful information and my must to do.
Useful Places :
Giristi:
The nearest restaurant and minimarket are in the small hamlet of Giristi, 15 minutes from the house by car. The minimarket is authentic and typical of the islands. While it offers a limited choice of products, it has most of the necessary things for the house. Minimarket’s owner, Manoussos and his wife are very nice, and sometimes sell their own products, some of which are organic. They also make great coffee that you can drink on the spot.
Ioulis (Ioulida):
About 25 minutes from the house by car, you will find the village of Ioulis, the main village in the island.
It is a beautiful and authentic little village with shops, restaurants and cafés. Most notably, there are the excellent tavern "Ton Kalofagadon" and the closest pharmacy, behind the municipal parking lot and the medical center. There are ATMs as well in the village.
If you go to Ioulis in the high season, it is better to arrive before 7 p.m., because it is sometimes difficult to find parking.
Nature and Hiking :
Kea has many beautiful, naturally hilly landscapes. It has typical cycladic landscapes, but also forests of almond trees and green oaks, as well as numerous terrace farms.
It is a perfect island for hikers and nature lovers, as there are many hiking trails on the island, some of which are ancient paved trails.
These trails traverse the island, sometimes with considerable elevation gains and tie some villages to each other or lead to pretty, unfrequented beaches.
It is a fantastic experience.
You have to be in good physical condition and you may however be cautious in summer, and make sure to stay well hydrated.
The archaeological spot of Karthea, can only be accessed by boat or through a hiking trail. It is a real must-see in the island!
Places to visit :
Here are a few places among the many villages and archaeological spots in the island:
Ioulis:
Ioulis is a real staple of visiting Kea. It is a must to do.
It is one of the most beautiful and authentic villages in the Cyclades. This high altitude village has pretty alleys and impressive views on the valleys of Kea as well as the sea. From Ioulis you may see stunning sunsets.
In Ioulis there is a little archaeological museum, which I highly recommend as Kea has a fascinating history. However you will have to look up the opening and closing times.
There is also the lion of Kea, a monolithic statue from the archaic era that appears to be smiling. The walk to get there is pleasant. First you need to park in the village, then walk up the village. What follows is a very nice 35 minute walk to the lion, with view on the island and the sea until you get to the spot. My personal advice is to do this excursion around 7 pm, then go back to Ioulis and have dinner in one of the restaurants on the main square of the village.
Karthea:
During the Antiquity, Kea was made up of 4 city-kingdoms: Karthea, Pisses, Ioulis and Korissia which formed the « metropolis of Keos ».
New parts of the ancient Karthea are nowadays regularly discovered by archaeologists
and are comprised of several temples (of Apollo, Athena…), an ancient theater, all of them in a outstanding site, on a rocky headland overlooking the sea and two wonderful beaches. One can only get there by foot or boat (about 40 minutes walk…). Therefore the place is quiet and well preserved.
The hike to Karthea is also an absolute Must!…
You will walk through beautiful nature sceneries on archaic era paths leading to an ancient city…then you may bathe in cristal clear waters and then rest on the fine sand of one of the nicest beaches in the island. It is unique.
Please make sure to treat the place with due respect.
How to get there: the route goes through Ellinika, Kato Meria, then take left to Kambi (not to Pisses that is straight forward) and at a small crossroad to the left at Stavroudaki, there is a sign at the beginning of the small track « to Karthea ». It is the easiest way to go. You can drive the track and park when it ends. Then you’ll find the downhill path taking you approximately 40 minutes walk (the elevation is 250 meters). You should be warned that there is nothing there as food or drink…Of course the climb back will take a little longer. Shall we advise not to go there when the sun is high, walking at noon is dangerous. My favorite time to go is 5 p.m before sunset and climb back around 8 in the shadow.
You can also call Mr Nikolaos Demenegas who will take you there riding his donkeys. Make sure to call him before (at least one hour), kids…and adults love that.
Panaghia Kastriani Monastery:
It is North of the island on a magnificent natural site, with an all around breathtaking view, that the picturesque and charming Monastery takes place. Visits are authorized and there is a small traditional bar where you can have refreshments. A worth visiting place.
Kato Meria:
A small village on the hill along the road that makes you feel like you’re at the end of the world… It has a mini-market and two tavernas. The smaller one stands in front of the charming square and is at the top of the hill.
Pisses:
A larger village in a valley where you’ll find a large beach (for families). At the end of the beach stands a taverna called Christophoros. The place is run by very nice people and the food is great.
Koundouros and Kambi:
South-west of the Island, these two places are upscale resorts. Mostly small sand beaches a bit more crowded than the eastern ones, nice villas and inhabited mills at Koundouros. When you’re looking for a little animation during the day.

Sykamia:
The one I like the most. Very close to the house. Fine sand, clean with sea pines to provide shadow, only two houses nearby, calm. The beach.
Otzias:
Large sandy beach. Crowdy sometimes (with families most of the time) but relaxed and pleasant. Ideal for children. Some parts are furnished, two restaurants nearby.
Spathi:
Large sandy beach with many sunbeds and a restaurant.
Gialiskari:
Stands between Korissia and Vourkari. Small sandy beach. Trendy, with sunbeds, a bar and a restaurant.
Kambi:
Nice sandy beach but with not much shade. No sunbed. A small family restaurant above the road. Wonderful sunsets you can also enjoy while having an Ouzo and appetizers there.
Koundouros:
A furnished and often crowded beach.
Koundouraki:
A nice sandy beach with sunbeds. You will find the island’s nautical center there.
Restaurants :
To Kalofagadon:
Ideal setting on Ioulis square. The tables are set under the trees and you can enjoy the freshness of altitude. Serves good and typical greek cuisine.
Strofi tou Mimi:
Nice taverna with its tables set on the sand by the nice Vourkari’s bay. Ducks and geese wandering around the tables sometimes. Families love it.
To Perasma :
It is the closest tavern to the house about 15 minutes by car, in the hamlet of Giristi. No show for this simple and not very touristic establishment. But it is a very good traditional Greek cuisine that awaits you there. A place for initiates.
Enea Korres:
At the end of Vourkari’s bay, a little bit out of the way. A taste of authentic. Good traditional greek cuisine.
Ravaïsi:
On the port of Korissia. A young and friendly team. You can taste the real souvlaki there. Quick and cheap.
O Filippas:
A good Traditional Grill restaurant up the hill above Vourkari. There is a very nice view of Agios Nikolaos bay and Korissia. A meat specialist…
Taverna Kambi:
Above Kambi beach. Good family restaurant
Rolandos:
On the port of Korissia. Rolandos welcomes you and serves a very good traditional greek cuisine
Magazes:
Nicely decorated restaurant on the port.
Otzia Kouzina:
A beach restaurant at Otzias. Beware, the restaurant is often crowded at lunch time.
Taverna tis Annas:
Close to the beach at Otzias. Traditional Taverne. Good family cuisine.
Vourkarion:
On Vourkari bay. Large Tavern - Restaurant
Spathi beach restaurant:
Modern style. Suits all.
Ta Poularakia:
Small Taverna in the picturesque Kato Meria hamlet. For a short drink with appetizers or diner with an « in the middle of nowhere » sensation. There is a Minimarket nearby (very well stocked).
Simos Karthaia:
Large traditionnal Tavern in Kato Meria
Lagoudera:
Close to the pier at Korissia. A good restaurant (traditional dishes), friendly welcome.
O Christoforos:
Located at the end of Pisses beach, a traditional tavern on a terrace, ideal for groups, with always excellent dishes.
Food and grocery stores :
Aristeios:
At Milopotamos, on the way to Korissia, you’ll find on the side of the road one of the best grocery store in the island. High quality local products. Dried fruits and tomatoes, wine, honey, pastries, deli, dairy products, olive oil, fresh fruits and vegetables, most of them from the island! The place is unmissable.
Mini and Supermarkets:
Minimaket Manoussos at Giristi. Very convenient, the closest (from the house). You can have a coffee (italian style) and homemade pastries there on the terrace admiring the landscape.

Supermarket Eklekton, on the side of the road lower towards Korissia, the is another one on the port.

There are two in Korissia. One is close to the pier. The other in a small street behind.
One is on the upper road of Ioulida

One downtown Korissia
The other called Iannis, at the beginning of the road from Korissia to Ioulida, close to the outdoor movie theater. Probably the best…
Fish shop:
I know one at Korissia. Near the Butcher’s. You can also go early to the port and get it direct from the fishermen in Vourkari and Korissia. It is necessary to inquire on the spot, according to the arrivals.

Aigaion catering: in Korissia. They can organize dinners, receptions, deliver meals. They produce refined cuisine and neat présentation. They have a web site : Aigaion Catering.
Nautical sports :
Koundouraki beach (near Koundouros), is a nice fully equipped beach with sunbeds, umbrellas, bar. Iannis is the boss of Kea Water Sports, he’s been there many years. He offers nautical activities like waterskiing, wakeboard, canoe, diving, paddle and many more. Many langages spoken there. You can find it on the Web.
Boat rental :
Ploes Keas rents boats. They have a website. Better contact them before arrival.
Bike rental (electric):
Kea Terra Active rents electric bikes. You will find them at Aristeios shop in Milopotamos
You’re advised to book a few days before.

Ferries :
There are several boat companies that allow you to go to Kea.
Most make trips between the port of Lavrio and the port of Kea.
Lavrio is a port of Attica about one hour from Athens, and 30 minutes from Athens International Airport, by taxi.
There are also buses that connect the airport to Lavrio, but they make many stops, and it is much longer.
The boats are ferries and can take cars, in this case it is better to book in advance, especially in high season or on weekends.
For pedestrians it is not necessary to book tickets. You can buy them when you arrive at the port, there are always places.
Some boats connect Kea to other islands.
Ferry schedules are available on the companies' websites a few months in advance, and change little from year to year.
I find the openseas site practical to consult them.
There are several boats a day, many in high season and on weekends.
The boat trip is short, about an hour.
Kea is the closest island of the Cyclades archipelago to Athens.
Then it is much easier to reach Kea by boat than most other islands, especially from the airport, because you don't have to go through Athens.
Car Rental :
There are several on the island
I recommand Leon Rent a Car, they’re at the pier and speak english. They have a website so you can book in advance. More convenient in high season.
You will need a car for sure to enjoy all the beaches and country, the best is a 4WD but all the small cars can do most of the roads even the dusty ones.
Most travelers who come to the island, take a taxi between the airport and the port of Lavrio. The trip takes about 30 minutes.
You must arrive at the port at least about 30 minutes before the departure of the boat. There are small offices to buy your ticket on site.
So they take the ferry without a car, which is simpler and does not require a reservation, then they rent their car on the island.
Moreover the price of a taxi between the airport and Lavrio is about the same as the price of a ferry ticket for a car.
So I recommend renting a car from Kea.
