Dragonfly is a beautiful new timber frame home designed and built by master timber framers from the North Shore. With 2 private entrances it’s perfect for 2 couples, families of 4-5, North House Folk School students, artists, or North Shore adventurers who either want two self-contained units or one larger shared space. Situated on 3 acres of secluded birch, aspen, cedar and fir, it’s 1.5 miles away from downtown Grand Marais yet tucked away in the tranquility and privacy of the North Woods. Dragonfly is a newly crafted timber frame home with log infill walls and magnificent roof trusses that tower above in all living spaces. A spacious and well-equipped open plan kitchen affords the ability to explore new culinary creations. Large and plentiful south facing windows flood the living room and main bedroom with low winter sun, and the wide overhangs shield out high summer sun. This house is perfect for couples, North House Folk School students, birders, skiers and hikers. It is a timber framer’s dream cabin, designed by Peter Henrikson (of Notre Dame cathedral roof reconstruction fame) and Lonnie Dupre, Arctic explorer and local dovetail log home builder. Marvel at the symmetry, engineering excellence and masterful joinery in every part of the house! Wrap around windows provide views of birch, aspen, cedar, and fir trees, as well as a large variety of birds. The opportunity is also there to see diverse wildlife through the expansive windows. There is plenty of parking close to the house and everything is on one level. In-floor heating makes for quiet and comfortable temperature control in the winter. High awning windows and screened sliding doors make it easy to stay cool in the summer months. The larger south side of the house is composed of an open-plan well-appointed kitchen, dining area and spacious living room, as well as a large bedroom with queen-sized bed, full bathroom and laundry. The bedroom has views of the surrounding woods and a sliding door that opens to the deck. The north side consists of a combined living room, dining area, and kitchenette, a bedroom with queen-sized bed, and a full bathroom. It has wrap around views of an enchanting wetland forest with dense wooded canopy, blanketed with fern and mossy fallen logs. My family and I were very impressed with this gorgeous cabin. It was perfectly clean and the most well stocked Airbnb I’ve stayed in, including every dish, cooking utensil, and spice we needed. The decor and style was the most perfect northern cabin atmosphere with trees surrounding it, making it feel secluded and private. We were impressed with the small kitchenette in the second portion, the comfy seating for everyone, and the beautiful deck perfect for our morning coffee.
The Dragonfly is perfect. Gorgeous space with thoughtful touches. Spotlessly clean, comfortable beds, full kitchen, enough space for family fun and room to spread out for quiet time. Surrounded by nature yet close to all the fun of Grand Marais. Lovely hosts who have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. We will definitely book the Dragonfly again the next time we are in the area. Thanks again for sharing your home!
From the architecture to amenities, we were very imprressed about how every single detail was so well thought out! It was such a dreamy stay!
If you are looking for a peaceful and comfortable getaway on the north shore or in Grand Marais, Dragonfly is a good fit for you. The location is great if you are looking for easy driving distance to hike/bike/ski trails, and for popping into town. The hosts, Jon and Tamara, have clearly put a lot of thought into making the house an inviting and homey space. The house is well-furnished, particularly the kitchen. Jon was responsive throughout the process and I appreciated the prompt communication. We greatly enjoyed our stay and definitely recommend Dragonfly to others.
Though the house is in the Grand Marais city limits and close to downtown, it is completely secluded and quiet. It is a quarter mile drive down a private gravel road off Highway 61 at the western edge of town. The newly completed paved bike trail to Cut Face Creek, and paved bike path into town, are at the top of Ravenwood Road. Up Yonder at the Harbor Light is across the street from the turn-off, and Putt ‘n Pets minigolf is next door. Down the hill into Grand Marais, there are many restaurants ( Angry Trout Cafe, Gunflint Tavern, Voyageur Brewing, Sven and Ole’s Pizza, South of the Border Cafe, Blue Water Cafe, My Sister’s Place, Superior Creamery, Cascade Restaurant (southwest along Highway 61 in the Cascade River area), and Sydney’s Frozen Custard), as well as Java Moose Espresso Cafe , and several food trucks (The Crooked Spoon, Taste of India, The Bad Seed, and Shook Smoothies). The Cook County Co-Op, Johnson’s Foods and Gene’s IGA all provide a wide selection of groceries.
