Happy Stones is located on the southern flank of the Sri Lanka Hill Country at an elevation of 2710 ft (825 m). This location provides scenic southerly views over green rolling hills, valleys and distant lakes. On a clear day the panoramic view can extend 45 miles to Hambantota on Sri Lanka’s south coast. The altitude of Happy Stones provides a pleasant year-round climate that is neither too hot nor too cold.
Happy Stones is positioned off a quiet and steep rural road two miles southeast of the small town of Beragala. Its location is also 4.5 miles (by road) east of the town of Haldummulla and five miles (by road) southwest of the large town of Haputale. This area has a rich bio-diversity with numerous types of flora and fauna. The hills above Happy Stones are covered with cloud forests and tea plantations. There are plenty of shops in Beragala, Haldummulla and Haputale and these may be accessed either by car or by using a tuk tuk. Haputale is located on the famous Hill Country railway line with daily trains to Ella, Kandy and Colombo.
There are many things to do and places to visit near to Happy Stones. These include the waterfalls at Kirawanagama (three miles south), the Diyaluma Falls (14 miles east), the AA016 viewpoint just south of Haputale (4.5 miles northeast), Adisham Hall - St Benedict’s Monastery (eight miles north), Lipton’s Seat (12 miles northeast), Udawalawe Reservoir and elephant sanctuary (18 miles south), Ella (19 miles northeast), and Horton Plains National Park (22 miles northwest).

Parking is free at Happy Stones. It is easy to get around the local area by car and it is relatively easy to get around without a car. Some of the best nearby sightseeing attractions may also be reached either by tuk-tuk, bus or by train.
The different transport options for reaching nearby places are as follows:
1. How do I get to Beragala from Happy Stones?
The small town of Beragala lies two miles northwest of, and 700 ft uphill from, Happy Stones. At Beragala you can buy food and other essentials and also take buses to Haputale and elsewhere. There are three ways to get to Beragala:
a) Car. This is the quickest way.
b) Tuk-tuk (small taxi). One can be ordered quickly by telephone and will pick you up at Happy Stones. The one-way cost is 400-500 LKR.
c) Walk. This will take about 45 minutes. Returning may be quicker as it is downhill.
2. How do I get to Haldummulla from Happy Stones?
The town of Haldummulla is slightly larger than Beragala and offers different shopping options to Beragala. Haldummulla lies 3 miles west of Beragala and is 5 miles by road from Happy Stones. There are three ways to get to Haldummulla:
a) Car. This is the quickest way.
b) Tuk-tuk. The one-way cost is about 1000 LKR.
c) Walk to Beragala and take the bus to Haldummulla. The regular red and blue Government and Private buses stop in Beragala and travel to Haldummulla. The one-way bus cost is only 80-100 LKR.
3. How do I get to Haputale from Happy Stones?
The large town of Haputale offers far more shopping options as well as restaurants and a railway station. Haputale lies 6 miles by road east-northeast of, and 2350 ft uphill from, Happy Stones. There are three ways to get to Haputale:
a) Car. This is the quickest way.
b) Tuk-tuk. The one-way cost is about 1500 LKR.
c) Walk to Beragala and take the bus to Haputale. The red and blue Government and Private buses travel regularly between Beragala and Haputale. The one-way bus cost is only 80-100 LKR.
4. How do I get to Idalgashinna from Happy Stones?
The small and beautiful village of Idalgashinna lies at an elevation of 1615 m (5,300 ft) in the high hills just north of Happy Stones. Idalgashinna is famous for its picturesque railway station, its nearby tea plantations, and for its scenic hiking trails. There are four ways to get to Idalgashinna:
a) Tuk-tuk. The road is steep and rough in parts but tuk-tuks can make it!
b) Walk. This is a long, steep and challenging hike but can be done.
c) Railway from Haputale (recommended). This train ride is very scenic, cheap and takes only 5-10 minutes.
d) Walk along the railway line from Haputale. This walk takes 2-2.5 hours and gives great scenic views to the north.
5. How do I get to the nearby beautiful sightseeing places that you recommend in your Guidebook?

By train from Haputale you can get to Ella, Idalgashinna, Ohiya (and Horton Plains National Park), Ambewela (the largest grass lands and cattle farms), Pattipola (the highest railway station in Sri Lanka), Nuwara Eliya (known as ‘Little England’), Kandy and Colombo. By bus from Haputale you can get to Bandarawela, Ella and Badulla. You can also reach the Dambatenne Tea Factory, Lipton’s Seat and the Diyaluma Waterfall by bus. Travelling by bus in Sri Lanka is very cheap - it costs about 20 LKR per mile. The Kirawanagama Waterfall is best-reached either by car, tuk-tuk or by walking.
