Sheringham historically was a small fishing village, but the arrival of the railway in 1887 turned it in to a popular destination for visitors far and wide. A bustling, seaside town with a traditional feel, it is still very much a working fishing port but also home to lots of diverse shops, great independent places to eat and lovely walks across the cliff tops and along the beach - sandy when the tide is out! Be sure to try Marmalade's Bistro and The Bank. The Poppy Line still operates diesel and steam engines which run from the pretty Edwardian station in Sheringham centre along the coast, through Weybourne and Kelling and on to Holt. Sheringham's beach has a Blue Flag award and there is a plenty of entertainment for the family in Sheringham, whatever the weather including, including The Reef Leisure Centre, with its indoor swimming pool. Sheringham has festivals and carnivals all year round including the famous Crab & Lobster Festival and Sheringham Carnival. Sheringham also still has a large traditional outdoor market, held on Saturdays throughout the year and on Wednesdays from April to November.
Nearby is the National Trust's Sheringham Park (famous for its stunning rhododendron display each Spring), with miles of hilly countryside covered with gorse and purple heather and offers lovely sea views. Felbrigg Hall and Blickling Hall are only a short hop in the car too.
Fabulous views are also found at the top of Beeston Bump, a large grassy hill which is 103m tall and was formed at the end of the ice age.
If you head east, a little further up the coast the beaches at West Runton and East Runton are definitely worth a visit. East Runton is a popular destination for surfers. For fresh, local seafood pop to Rocky Bottoms where they deliver local shellfish from pot to plate in a lovely setting with amazing view of the coast.
To the west, less than five miles away, is the traditional, family orientated seaside town of Cromer, with its award-winning pier, beautiful beach with rock pools, cliffs and sandy expanses, and independent places to eat out. Cromer is also Norfolk's surfing hot spot - lessons and equipment hire can be booked at Glide Surf School. For a family day out, Amazona Zoo is a must. The Pier has an iconic Pavillion Theatre - the only of its kind in the country - which stages traditional variety shows and live music events. With carnivals, markets and festivals, there is always something fun going on in and around Cromer all year round.
