An old smuggling village, the ever-popular village of Thornham is a great base for a holiday right on the North Norfolk Coast. Wide expanses of salt marsh separate the village from the sea, making it is paradise for walkers and bird watchers. There are several great places to eat including Thornham Deli, selling all manner of local produce and great coffee, breakfasts and lunches; The Lifeboat Inn, an old smuggling haunt complete with heavy beams and roaring fires, good food and ales; and The Orange Tree, a lovely gastro pub which also boasts a dog menu. Reached by a walk over the sea defences and salt marshes, Thornham beach is quite stunning, and you will be rewarded with total peace and quiet. The Drove Orchards offers seasonal pick-your-own fruits plus a farm shop sells ready picked fruit, vegetables, butcher, and cheese counter selling local produce. Gurneys fishmonger with an on-site smokehouse offers delicious fresh fish alongside their own range of homemade pâtés and sauces. Visit Eric's for some of the best fish and chips or pizza, available to eat in or take away. Enjoy a peruse around the lifestyle, art shops and antique shops that circumvent the funky yurt at the centre.
Neighbouring Brancaster Brancaster is famed for its vast, breath-taking sandy beach. The expanse stretches for miles, backed by gentle sand dunes and the famous links golf course of The Royal West Norfolk Golf Club. Good food can be found at the local gastro pub, The Ship Inn, and The Jolly Sailors welcomes muddy boots. For more formal dining book a table in advance at The White Horse which boasts spectacular views of the marshes from the conservatory and terrace.
The Coasthopper bus stops in the village, making it easy to get anywhere along the coast. Be sure to visit Holme-next-the-Sea, Old Hunstanton and Hunstanton. This traditional bustling seaside town comprises of a vivid plethora of ice cream parlours, delis, fish 'n' chip shops, sweet shops, crazy golf, arcades, water sport facilities, funfair and Sea Life Centre.
The NWT Holme Dunes Nature Reserve and RSPB Titchwell are both within walking distance, or a very short drive by car. The Georgian village of Burnham Market, plus the Holkham Estate and HM The King's Sandringham Estate are only a short drive away too.
