Ruthie had been a frequent visitor to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico for many years & as many of us do. She would say “one day I’ll leave my crazy busy life as a restaurant owner and move to the island, be a mermaid all day & enjoy my life’”. And, after a particularly rough couple of years as a cancer caregiver and the onset of Covid she came to the Island to what had been her “happy place” for a 5 day SCUBA trip, her first ever solo trip, to clear her mind. Fortunately the weather wasn’t great for diving so she extended her stay. Again and again. As each day arrived she found herself smiling more, she heard her own laugh, she felt the burdens of the few years prior lighten and the Covid restrictions became a welcome “time out.” She was spending lots of time in the water and in the rainforest. Ruthie says “I could feel myself being reborn. I wasn’t willing to give up the peace I had found. For the first time, I did what I had always wanted. I followed my own heart and my own bliss.” So in August 2020, she made the move! “I got a little job with a local scuba dive and snorkel company that I had been a customer of for years, fell in love with the boat captain, simplified everything about my life, and worked on my SCUBA certifications.” She & her love purchased The Dragon Fruit, their beloved boat, in November and began Simpatico Charters and fully restored it themselves. Then in July they left their jobs and went out on their own. “We work really hard, but we are doing what we love and are passionate about- and it’s a real pleasure to share our love for the Island, for our beautiful coral reefs and for each other with our guests.”. As this new dream begins, she says she is truly grateful and excited to host you in her home. With a total of 14 years in the restaurant business and the past nearly 2 years in the boat charter business, she understands hospitality.
