For many years I traveled between a cabin in the mountains above Ashland, that my late husband and I built on our summers off from teaching, and a home in Santa Barbara. In the summer of 2014 I was driving up the local, historic stage coach route, Old Siskiyou Highway, just outside Ashland. I saw a two-story yellow farmhouse for sale. It took me back to my childhood living in an old farmhouse on a family farm outside Doylestown, Pennsylvania. I fell in love with the house and property, sold my place in Santa Barbara, and moved permanently to Ashland. For most of my childhood I spent the school years in Pennsylvania and summers in Santa Barbara, California. I attended junior high and high school at Abington Friends School in Jenkintown, PA, a Quaker school built in the late 1600's. I earned a B.A. in Sociology from Pitzer College, Claremont, CA, a B.A. in music from UCSB, and a teaching credential from UCI. I am a retired elementary school teacher. I began playing classical piano at the age of 5 and picked up accordion and guitar in my free time. I studied piano and voice in college and voice in later years. I am currently studying guitar. I love writing, singing and playing bluegrass, traditional, and folk music, hiking, and gardening. More recently, at the urging of a friend, I added composing songs to my list of interests. My favorites of the year: watching "Nobody's Fool" with Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy, reading "The Hummingbird's Daughter" by Luis Alberto Urea, picking elderberries near Hyatt Lake and shucking, juicing, and canning the juice for winter, and playing croquet with friends on my lawn at the "Mountain House."
