Charming studio apartment hidden in a steep, winding and picturesque cobblestone road in the peaceful part of the medieval city of Motovun. As a part of a eclectically refurbished 18th century house built on top of the second defence wall with a breathtaking view of the tranquil surroundings -vineyards and olive yards spread over the hills scattered with sleepy little villages, and overlooking rooftops of the houses in the neighborhood… After just a couple of steps down the inner staircase, one enters into what is the real jewel of the house: a calming, stylishly refurbished apartment accommodating 2 persons. What used to be just a floor in a classical 18th century Istrian house has now been meticulously redecorated to become a stylish accommodation unit delicately combining various styles and époques, aimed at providing an entirely new aesthetical dimension. The place abounds with beautiful little artefacts and design details catching the occupant’s eye at every corner some of witch were (re)made in the art studio situated in the basement. The 50 square meter apartment consists of a living and sleeping area, fully equipped kitchen with a dining area complete with a reading nook, a bathroom as well as a spacious terrace. Apart from the magnificent views and early morning bird song you are welcome to enjoy a variety of books from the library, great selection of vinyl records or simply close your eyes and immerse yourself in the sound of silence.
We were actually looking for a place in Trieste as a base to explore Istria, but Airbnb showed this apartment in the search result and upon seeing the photos and researched a little about Motovun, we decided to change our plan and use Motovun as a base of the trip just so we can stay at this beautiful apartment. It looks exactly like the photos — even better in real life because you can actually feel the warmth and the homey atmosphere. Location is not too far from the parking (300 meters), and 5 mins walk to amazing restaurants (and view!) on top of the hills. Branko is an amazing host that takes care of you even before you arrived. He gave very detailed instruction of where to park, met us for check-in, gave amazing recommendations of where to go and what to do, even stocked the fridge full of ingredients enough to cook a simple breakfast. We loved it so much we are already talking about coming back sometime, hopefully soon. ❤️
Branko is a great host! Warm, friendly, and he has designed an apartment that is art-filled and homey. Greeted us and sent us on our way warmly. He gave us the space & quiet we needed but was always responsive when we had a question. He is a great source of info and knows Istria well. And his dinner recommendations are excellent. We had a great time!
The Birdnest is a lovely, unique apartment which matches it's location...Motovun. We especially enjoyed relaxing on the balcony overlooking the countryside. Branko greeted us, helped with parking, showed us around and gave us recommendations.
It was a genuine treat to stay here. Branko is an extremely talented homemaker, and we thought the interior design was very clever. The views of the surrounding (truffle full) wooded countryside are stunning, and the whole effect felt as if we had walked into the pages of a magazine; At the same time it all felt very homely. Lovely (truffle filled!) restaurants are just up the hill, or you could use the well appointed kitchen, and we were grateful for the provisions left for our arrival. Any of the sights in Istria are within day-trip distance if you have transport, or you could just sit on the veranda and soak up the scenery/local wine. The streets in Motovun are steep, very uneven, and It's a few minutes walk up the hill from the car parking areas.
Motovun, a small but important medieval town in central Istria, situated on top of the hill, has a rich cultural heritage and today is one of the most visited cities in Istria. It is known for many things, among them for its exquisite local truffle cuisine, finest wines and the most iconic summer event – Motovun Film Festival, one of the best European film festival. Motovun is a great starting point for your other trips because it's location provides quick and easy access to other cities and places in Istria!
What makes Motovun extra special is an exceptional hospitality you can expect from local people, making your visit even more enjoyable.

Dear guest,
If you are coming from the direction of Rijeka, after passing the Učka tunnel, take the Lupoglav, Buzet exit. For me, this is the most beautiful way to get to Motovun because for the most part you pass through the Mirna canyon. On the way there are several Istrian gems that are definitely worth visiting such as Roč, Kotle, Hum, Buzet. After Istarske toplice on the hill on the left you will see Motovun and from the main road turn left over the bridge and start the ascent towards Motovun. When you reach the foot of Motovun, turn left towards a small parking lot and a toll booth. If you are coming from the direction of Rovinj / Pula / Pazin via Karojba, when you reach the foot of Motovun, turn right towards a smaller parking lot and a toll booth.
At this point, have your reservation ready (printed or ready on your mobile device) based on which you will be directed further towards the city by the access road.
After two sharp turns you will pass a row of houses on the left and you will arrive to the drop off zone. Drop off zone is a parking extension on the right, where a short stay is allowed for baggage unloading and accommodation in the apartment. After accommodation, it is necessary to move the car to the parking lot provided for guests of the apartment located below the cemetery. If you have any problems along the way just give me a call.
