Historical Home The Cathedral of The Isles is Britain's smallest Cathedral and is delighted to offer B&B accommodation to guests from across the globe in its 2 historic, grade A listed college buildings, built in 1851. Set on the beautiful Isle of Cumbrae we are just 7 minutes from the mainland and about an hour's drive from Glasgow. Designed by William Butterfield, the accommodation buildings originally opened as a theological college in 1851. The church was inaugurated as a Cathedral in 1876. One of the greatest British architects of the nineteenth century, William Butterfield (1814-1900) was a master of Gothic Revival architecture, and was commissioned by the 6th Earl of Glasgow George Frederick Boyle to build the Cathedral, cloisters and college buildings. The site is made up of a working cathedral still performing regular Sunday services along with 2 "college" buildings that are used for accommodation for groups of either religious retreats, educational groups, support groups, artistic groups, or simply friends and families. We also welcome individual bed and breakfast bookings when we are not busy with groups. Anyone is welcome to stay here who wishes the unique experience of staying in Britain's smallest cathedral while enjoying some modern conveniences. The property is set in 10 acres of grounds which includes 3.5 acres of woodlands. There are accommodation rooms in both the North and South Colleges, with the common room (lounge), library (& lounge) and refectory (where breakfast is served) located on the ground floor of the South College. The South College also hosts the Cloisters Tearoom which during the busier months of the year is generally open Thurs-Sunday 12 to 4pm, although the tearoom is closed when we are hosting a large full board group. The ground floor of the North College contains the family room (ensuite), a double room (ensuite) and a twin room with private bathroom. The first floor of the North College contains 2 further double rooms (ensuite), a twin room (ensuite), and a double standard (shared bathroom) and 4 single standard rooms (shared bathroom). The first floor of the South College (which is attached to the Cathedral) contains all shared bathroom rooms consisting of one triple room (double & single bed) , 3 twin rooms, a double room, and two queen sized single rooms. Every room is equipped with tea and coffee making facilities. Some rooms enjoy stunning views over the Cathedral grounds, and some rooms in the South College enjoy views of the front of the Cathedral itself along with views of the grounds. Most rooms that are not ensuite have a sink and mirror within the room. The triple (double & single beds) standard room in the South College has a private window into the Cathedral itself, and many years ago, was used to house those too sick to attend church in person, but instead could listen to the service from the comfort of their bedroom. The Cathedral itself is open daily and guests are welcome to walk around the building, indeed the Cathedral attracts many visitors amongst those on holiday on the island. WiFi is available throughout the North and South College buildings. The Cathedral Guest House is an amazing historical home available at affordable prices for bed & breakfast guests.
The Isle of Cumbrae is just 7 minutes by ferry from the small town of Largs on the West Coast of Scotland. The Cathedral and College buildings themselves are located on College Street and set within their own extensive grounds.
The Cathedral has its own parking and is just 5 minutes walk from the waterfront where there is a local bus stop. Buses meet every ferry.
