New Communities' main campus, Resora - located on the Cypress Pond Plantation property - is a poetic place where meditation and reflection are the heart of the restorative escape from everyday life. Tucked in the midst of a rich water land oasis on a 1,600+ acre farm, this destination is a place where the land becomes a retreat, the mind can relax and the body can refresh. Resora provides an experience of nature while bearing witness to farming innovation and research, and Civil Rights history. Now this is 'glamping' at its best! This two bedroom retreat is fully handicapped accessible with a ramped entrance and features beautiful hardwood flooring throughout and an open floor plan with a fully equipped galley kitchen and bar seating, a dining and living room area. The Slater King Cottage has a magnificent view of Sherrod Manor, the 19th century mansion that is the centerpiece of Resora. This cottage is named after the King family, who were and are one of the notable families in Albany, Georgia. Slater King was a real estate agent, vice president of the Albany Movement -- a desegregation and voters' rights coalition -- in 1962, and one of the founding board members of the New Communities Land Trust. He traveled to Israel with the founding organizers to view the kibbutz land sharing system and worked with his brother, C.B. King (for whom a street is named at NCI), to incorporate New Communities in the state of Georgia. Mr. King identified the first site of New Communities in Lee County, but was tragically killed in a car accident a few months after the organization was incorporated.
The place was beautiful and very nice. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting a very relaxing nice, clean comfortable stay. I truly enjoyed my stay. 10/10.
This is a beautiful setting and a beautiful cabin. so cozy and warm. Very very clean and beautifully decorated. BUT what makes this place special is where it sits. It is on a property called 'Resora'. and it's a special place. Surrounded by Pecan trees, on an old plantation, with a beautiful 85 acre lake and another smaller pond l, walking trails for miles. It's really a different wonderful experience.
Loved our Thanksgiving stay here. Walking through the orchard roads, we saw deer, Fox squirrels, hawks and woodpeckers to name just a few animals. A beautiful place, very quiet and peaceful.
Located at the center of Southwest Georgia, our facilities are less than 5 miles from the Albany Regional airport and a 10 minute drive to downtown Albany, GA, which offers a wide range of outdoor activities, dining, shopping, the arts, including a rich cultural heritage tied to African and Native American culture and the Civil Rights Movement.

I am Shirley Sherrod and I welcome you to Resora at New Communities. I am a lifelong resident of Southwest Georgia and I lead our organization of farmers, activists, friends and family committed to the preservation of land, sustainable agriculture and community power. You will find Resora to be a poetic place, and a restorative escape that we enjoy every day. In the midst of this rich land with its ponds, cypress grove, and 1,600 plus acre farm is a retreat where the mind can relax, and the body can be refreshed. New Communities, founded in 1969, is the fruit of Southwest Georgia Civil Right Movement. For over 60 years, we have worked for social change and economic opportunities in rural Southwest Georgia. The Resora cabins and historic buildings provide a backdrop for deep engagement with the hospitality, history and generative practice of African-American farmers of Southwest Georgia.
