High Wallabarrow Farm Cottage is a comfortable and cosy cottage in a glorious, deeply rural setting, flanked by Wallabarrow Crag (1000ft) and natural open farmland to the front. Breathtaking views in all directions. Attached to the main farmhouse, you'll have all the comforts you'd expect, including a fully equipped kitchen with a dining table and exposed wooden beams. A cosy living room with a door to the rear garden area with a small brook running through it. If you don't fancy cooking, the Newfield Arms, a traditional pub offering great food and real ales, is just a 1.5mi walk away. High Wallabarrow Farm is a traditional hilltop farm, owned by the National Trust, and home to tenant farmer Chris and his family who farm Herdwick Sheep amongst other livestock. The farm is situated at the very end of a lane that runs alongside the River Duddon. Upon arrival to view the cottage, we were overwhelmed by the stunning scenery and the friendliness of Chris and his family, so you can be sure to receive a warm and friendly welcome too. The location is perfect for walkers, with the Coniston Range Fells accessible from the door, along with the beautiful Duddon Valley to explore. Twenty minutes away is the village of Broughton-in-Furness, a historic village dating back to the 11th century with pubs, a restaurant, traditional butchers, greengrocers and a brilliant bakery that we can personally voucher for! Nature lovers will be spoilt with the area, as the farmland has one of the most extensive oak birch woodlands on its land, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with a plethora of bluebells in spring. The many bridleways are superb for mountain bikers, with tracks leading up the fells or sticking to the level(ish) country lanes. Secure bike storage is available. It's a remote location involving single-track roads, so you need to take some supplies with you, because you can't just pop down to the corner for a pint of milk. The only amenity you can reach relatively quickly (even on foot) is a pub -- which is rather nice. The surroundings are beautiful, and there are several walks that you can start directly from the property. The cottage itself is very pleasant and comfortable. It will be even better when they have replaced the temporary bed in the ground-floor bedroom. The description mentions farm noises: this was not a disturbance at all, as the noise was mostly in the afternoon. Mornings were very peaceful. The owner is friendly.
Die Umgebung ist traumhaft, das Cottage gemütlich . Chris nimmt sich Zeit für alle Fragen und kennt die besten Plätze . Wir haben die Zeit sehr genossen -extrem empfehlenswert.
A lovely, remote, peaceful cottage. Well- equipped kitchen. Plenty of space. 20 mins from Duddon Bridge - where we lost our mobile signal each day on returning to cottage. The clocks just went back so the cockerel didn't wake us until 7, very civilised.
Very lovely, rural farmhouse in the middle of nowhere! Very quite and peaceful. Lots of farm animals around and a great place to bring your dog. Our dog had a great time. Lots of lovely local walks up the fells and rivers. It is quite far to drive to other destinations like Windermere (50mins) Coniston Lake (45mins). It also is quite far from local food shops. About 30mins away from local Tescos and local grocers and butchers. There is also no Wi-Fi in the place, only can get it outside the property. Chris’ daughter was very helpful & friendly. Thank you for a lovely stay!
We had a fantastic time at the cottage. Chris was very welcoming and helpful (as were all his family). The farm was absolutely beautiful and we could not have asked for better weather. This is the perfect location for a holiday where you get away from everything (there is limited phone service and internet which was perfect for what we wanted). There are lots of beautiful walks from the farm and a lovely river to swim in. There is also a great pub a short walk away from the house which was a fantastic place to go when we didn't fancy cooking. I would 100% recommend High Wallabarrow farm to anyone wanting to escape to peace and countryside.
The Duddon Valley is stunningly-beautiful and less busy too, yet it is relatively close to popular destinations such as Coniston (13mi), Ulverston (16mi), Eskdale (9mi) and the West Cumbria coast.
Local attractions include The Swinside Stone Circle, Barnscar Bronze Age Settlement at Devoke Water, and a Roman Fort on Hardknott Pass.
Close by is also the single track steam train La'al Ratty which runs through the Eskdale Valley to the coast at Ravenglass.
Also, the majestic Muncaster Castle is said to be haunted with its owl and hawk sanctuary with the Himalayan Garden and many more year-round events.
There is no public transport to this property. As such guests will need their own transport to reach the accommodation.
