Dunster · 整套乡村小屋 · 3室4床2.5卫 · 可住6人 · Historical holiday home in quaint Dunster village
The Oval is a luxury holiday home with original cruck beams, oak screening, a stunning four-poster bed, wood-burning stove and stone floors. In the heart of the beautiful Exmoor village of Dunster, it combines 14th century character with WiFi, Netflix and modern conveniences. Sleeping six in three bedrooms, there’s comfortable sitting room, well-equipped kitchen and dining room with patio doors to a courtyard and sun deck. Pet and child-friendly, The Oval is rated Four Star Gold by VisitEngland. Guests always comment on how large this house is - deceptively so. And while retaining all its 14th century period holiday cottage charm and cosy feel, it comes with all the contemporary finishes you'd expect. It's the perfect heritage cottage, but with Wi-Fi, a large, well-equipped kitchen, a utility room, high-quality furniture and furnishings, sumptuous bedding and linens, and lovely soft towels - all of which make for an indulgent getaway. As you would expect with an older cottage (built in 1366 according to The Time Team), you will need to duck your head in parts but that really does add to the atmosphere. So guests seeking authentic, yesteryear design with premium-quality contemporary finishing touches always love their time at The Oval. It’s just such a delight settling into one of Dunster's finest historical holiday cottages. It's Four Star Gold rated by VisitEngland, family, child and dog friendly too. Typical guest comments from our Visitor Book include: “Thank you for a lovely stay at The Oval. We have stayed in Dunster before but nothing has compared to the quaint and cost cottage so beautifully decorated for Christmas”; “This was our second visit to The Oval at this time of the year as we enjoyed it so much the first time round. Best of all was coming back to the lovely cosy cottage and settling down in front of the log fire in the evenings”: “A fantastic experience stepping into a time machine with all the ‘mod cons’. Everyone was friendly and cheerful and helpful. The Oval is very clean and has everything one could wish for – well done!”; “As others have said, this house felt like a cosy home from the minute we walked in. It really is a gorgeous house, to stay in such a historical place for three nights was a pleasure. Dunster is a wonderful village, full of beautiful walks and interesting shops. I’m sure we will be back as this stay was just too short!"
March 2024 Just had a wonderful 7 day break at Oval cottage. On arrival we were not disappointed. The place is breath taking..it was like stepping back in time. Even though this is an old building the accommodation had top quality fittings and we were very Impressed with the all the accommodations rooms. The kitchen had all we needed and we ended up eating home most nights as it was that nice. The location was perfect and a great base for exploring further afield before returning back a d enjoying the real log wood burner with a glass of wine. The host Lucy was really good and was always on hand to answer any questions we had. Lucy has found the magic formula to create an ideal holiday retreat. We will return and cannot wait for our next visit.
We had a really lovely stay. The Oval met all of our requirements – we really enjoyed using the wood burner and loved looking at the architecture. The history of the house is very interesting and it made for an excellent read. There were some nice touches around the house that we continually admired. Dunster’s church is elegant and its chimes are beautiful. We visited some lovely places including Dunster Castle, Lorna Doone Valley, and the Valley of Rocks. The Oval made a good temporary home and we wish we could take the holiday over and over again. Many thanks
A beautiful cottage in an amazing location. Lucy is a true host - perfect. She has thought of everything - from making check-in and parking easy to providing everything we needed. An amazing well equipped kitchen, charming personal touches in the decor, comfortable beds, little toiletries and logs for the fire, spotlessly clean. The cottage itself is just gorgeous, characterful and so cosy. We only had a short stay whilst visiting for a wedding, but we all said we wished we were staying longer. We will definitely return. Thank you so much!
The Oval is a lovely place to stay and was equipped with everything to make for a comfortable stay. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend!
Stayed at The Oval with grout friends for 3 nights, we were in Dunster for a wedding at Knowle Manor. This is a superb cottage, full of character and very comfortable, well equipped with plenty of space, would stay here again in a heartbeat. Lucy’s communication throughout was excellent, she described everything accurately and we found our way around the cottage and around the area with absolute ease.
The Oval, on West Street, is in the heart of the beautifully preserved village of Dunster which boasts historic buildings, a National Trust castle, dovecot, the iconic Yarn Market, and a sandy beach within walking distance. The village is within an International Dark Sky Reserve and guests can view the night sky from the comfort of the deck in the garden. A short stroll from the cottage along the cobbled streets finds the village’s independent shops, cafes, award winning restaurants and pubs serving traditional food and drink. Take the kids to paddle in the stream running under the picturesque Gallox Bridge, walk through the Tall Trees Trail at Nutcombe Bottom, or ride on the steam train from nearby Dunster Station stopping off at the harbour town of Watchet. Walkers will love our complimentary Little Book of 12 Exmoor Walks and guests can enjoy discounts on water sports, a round of golf, or an indulgent pamper treatment with Exmoor Character Cottages. Discover more of Exmoor’s stunning scenery, beaches, wildlife, and the Exmoor ponies, or head out to the A39 through the Holnicote Estate, to the breath-taking Jurassic coast, and the seaside resort of Lynton and Lynmouth.
Exmoor is best explored by car, where you have the freedom to stop and admire the beautiful views and wildlife (Exmoor ponies, deer, birds and farm animals). There's a local bus service, the heritage Steam Railway from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard (all 37 miles of it), and the Exmoor Coaster, an open-top bus that runs along the A39 from Minehead to Lynmouth from February to September/October.
We have two reserved parking spaces in Dunster for our guests. One is in a private car park a three minute walk from the house, the second is in the National Trust car park where we provide a permit that allows you to park overnight.
