Our gite is located on the edge of a quiet village, surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers, but within easy reach of amenities. Our neighbouring village has several shops, including a butcher and a pharmacy: there's a choice of two bakeries for your morning croissants! This being France, restaurants are available in neighbouring villages and there is fine dining too - we recommend the chateau of Camon but others are available.
Many of the local towns and villages have fabulous markets - Mirepoix (20 mins) is an extravagant highlight, and there are also large supermarkets in Carcassonne (35 mins) and Limoux (25 mins). If you wish to explore further afield, the Pyrenees are less than 1.5 hours drive, as is the Mediterranean coast. The caves at Niaux (1 hour) have world-class 17,000 year old cave art - booking is required.
We are located in the heart of Cathar country and the castles of Carcassonne, Lastours-Cabaret, and the tragic Montségur are amongst those worth a visit.
Our latest amenity is the traffic-free 42 mile trail that stretches from Monségur in the foothills of the Pyrenees, to the Canal du Midi (completing in 2023). Bike hire is available locally. If walking is your preference then there are tracks in all directions, with quiet woodland and vineyards to explore. A map for walkers is provided in your gite.
We mustn't forget the vineyards or 'Domaines', and the area offers everything from IGP wines to AOC-level wines. The department of Aude boasts no less than 8 AOC areas: Cabardès, La Clape, Corbières, Corbières-Boutenac, Fitou, Limoux, Malepère, and Minervois. The local sparkling crémant is pretty good too! Producers generally welcome visitors and tastings are a must. Some require booking however, so check in advance. Trip Advisor lists the best organised wine tours in the Aude should you wish to be accompanied by an expert.
After a day of exploring, you can sit on your terrace, drinking a glass of something fruity and eating the freshest of local produce from the market whilst watching the sun dip behind the distant mountains. Glorious.
