Nieu-Bethesda · 整套民居 · 3室4床1.0卫 · 可住5人 · Playwright's House, Nieu-Bethesda
This unpretentious, rustic and secluded Karoo home is where internationally acclaimed playwright and writer Athol Fugard wrote between 1990 and 2017. It's on the peaceful northeastern corner of our quaint village. Crystal-clear Karoo air, intense night skies, crackling winter fires, tranquillity. The cottage draws travellers, explorers, friends & families seeking connection; and it's an inspiring creative space. This spacious and serene cottage comfortably accommodates five people. Importantly, please keep in mind that there is only one bathroom (with a shower, basin and toilet). It is mostly free of modern-day distractions like TV and radio but there is Wi-Fi. And an inverter in the lounge where you can charge your laptop and mobile phones, and keep a lamp on, as well as the WiFi permanently plugged in and working during load-shedding. There are three bedrooms, a large living room, a spacious dining area, a kitchen, a single bathroom, and two outside areas. The east-facing outside area is a covered traditional Karoo 'stoep', the other - while more private - is uncovered and opens onto the Karoo garden. The main bedroom room with its queen-size bed sleeps two. The second bedroom, with two single beds, also sleeps a further two. The third bedroom/book-lined study has a single wooden bunk bed. All of the beds have electric blankets. The home is fitted with tall and shuttered Karoo-style sash windows. These repel the heat in summer and the bitter nighttime winter cold. The shutters, which replace curtains, are closed from the outside. The large open-plan dining room and separate living room are easily divided by closing wooden folding doors. The dining area has a traditional wood-burning fireplace, a 6-seater dining room table, and a double-bunk bed (this is for hosting an additional two hikers trekking the Compassberg Camino during the year). The north-facing living room contains these: a comfy couch, coffee table, comfortable chairs, a large old desk with chair, and a gas heater in winter. The kitchen contains all of the basics: a Nespresso coffee machine (please bring your favourite capsules along with you), a tall fridge (with freezer), an electric stove and oven, a microwave, a kettle, 2 wash-up basins, a kitchen table & chairs and most of the self-catering basics. There's a Cadac gas bottle with a cooking plate and kettle for load shedding. There are a few things that I want to emphasise, as I would want you to enjoy your time at the Playwright's House and not be disappointed: 1. This is an unpretentious, rustic & secluded old Karoo home. It's ideal if you're looking for a 'real' down-to-earth cottage. 2. There are many upmarket, even luxury venues in the village (and they're gorgeous!), which are appropriately priced - if you are NOT looking for rustic and down-to-earth I'll happily provide you with their contact information. 3. Again, while the house comfortably hosts 5 (7 - at a push! - for overnighting hiking groups there's an additional double bunkbed in the dining/living are), please note that there is only one bathroom (with toilet, hand basin and shower).
The house has lots of character and is very comfortable, not to mention extremely clean and tidy! Nice veranda and places to sit outside in the big garden. Very peaceful, private location on edge of the village, easy walking distance to shops, restaurants and gallerys . Highly recommended if you're visiting Nieu Bethesda
Please note that there's neither an autoteller nor a petrol station in the village - please draw cash and fuel up beforehand. There are bankcard facilities at most of the restaurants, as well as at the Padstal, at the Owl House, and at Die Winkel (which is the only convenience store).
We will provide you with a regularly updated local restaurant and drinks guide via your phone as well as a double-sided village map pdf.

DIRECTIONS from the N9 to Nieu-Bethesda (two roads lead to the village from the N9):
A GRAVEL ROAD leads off the N9, 60km south of Middelburg (the furthest north of the two roads). It leads through Bethesda Road railway siding to the village and is about 31km in distance.
Once descending into the village, keep straight until the T-junction and then turn right into Hudson Street.
The other road to the village is mainly TARRED and is 27km north of Graaff-Reinet. The first 20 kilometres are tarred, and after the sharp hairpin bend, the road becomes a gravel one for about 4 km.
When the road forks, keep right, pass through Sam’s Drift where the road is paved for a short while, pass the 'Tot Hier Toe' road stall on your right. This road becomes Martin Street, which is the village's main road, the Owl House is also located in this long street.
