Private apartment (80 m2)on the 1st floor of a villa. 2 bedrooms(21m2 and 15.5 m2) with private terrace (30 m2) and amazing view on the Bay Phaeton in the peninsula of Tahiti. The 1st room has a desk with wifi internet, and a large closet. The apartment has a private bathroom, mini fridge, and microwave oven, all in a nice resting/sitting area including a pool table. Access to infinity pool and kayaks are included.

We encountered issues with the host after we left. The stay itself had been fine although soon after arrival it was apparent the space was not appropriate for us with three small children (aged 1, 4 and 6). Safety-wise, the barrier around the outside patio was climbable and, along with the host, we were concerned one of the younger ones would climb it and topple down the huge fall so we kept the children mostly inside. Unfortunately the main living area inside is completely open to the downstairs level (foyer and hall) where the host goes between her bedroom and other rooms, as the stairs are completely open. On the listing at time of booking the accomodation was described as a ‘private apartment’, however there is no door or walls separating the downstairs foyer and hall. All noise created upstairs flows downstairs with no way to seperate. The bedrooms can be individually locked but the main living space is open to downstairs. We felt a bit anxious about the noise three young children who aren’t adjusted to the new time zone make in the living area. We saw the host many times because of this open space and close proximity. She didn’t hint or communicate any problems with us. However not long after checkout she sent a request for $85 NZD ($48 USD) extra, stating that we had left our doors open while air conditioning was on. Air conditioning was included in the price. We stayed two nights and on the first night the air con wasn’t working. The host got it fixed the next day which we were really grateful for and told her so. On the second night we kept the doors ajar (this means slightly open) so that we could hear our small children if they needed us in this unfamiliar environment. We replied to her monetary request and said we politely declined to pay as air con was included, explained why the door was ajar, and noted that we would never dream of asking for reimbursement for the room that only provided air conditioning 50% of our stay. We thanked her again for getting the air con fixed. We noted that she did not mention there was any issue during the stay and it would have been much better to tell us and give a chance to rectify. We then received 7 messages, retracting her request for money but covering all manner of personal comments, calling our behaviour “abusive”, and referencing my “self esteem” issues, my “attitude” and “ignoring” (typo but in context she meant our ignorance). I’ve been careful to include only what Air BnB can verify by reading our conversation. She also indicated she had written a bad review for us but believe it is unfair to have not addressed the issue in the moment in order to rectify it and then write us a bad review. The host eventually apologised in her messages for not having discussed it earlier but I am unsure whether she has retracted her review (Air BnB won’t release it til both parties have submitted reviews). Finally, the big question I asked in my reply to her messages was, how does she know [in a private apartment] whether her guests bedroom doors are open or closed, and whether it’s like that all the time? She declined to answer, replying to say she would “rather not continue”. For this unanswered question and the discomfort it brings up, lack of privacy, for the personal comments we received and because we value being up-front at the time if there’s an issue, we cannot recommend this Air BnB.
