Wow, The Starkey Estate has to be one of the most unique Airbnbs I’ve stayed at. The home is magical and you feel like you have stepped back in time. The home sits on 3 acres and has massive gardens. When you are outside you can’t even see the neighbors or any sign that you are in the city. The home is so secluded and private that you can enjoy peace and tranquility at all hours of the day. You really feel like you are out in the country and away from the city. While in reality you are less than 12 minutes from Downtown San Diego. The home was sparkling clean and everything looked great. For being a historic home everything looked perfect and worked properly. The bed was as perfect as it could be. I felt like I was at a luxury hotel. He even has a nitro cold brew coffee keg on tap. Nothing better than waking up and drinking and ice cold coffee on the front porch. It really made my morning. Robert was very nice and accommodating. We only stayed one night but will definitely be back and plan a weekend getaway. We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub and drinking wine all night. It truly was the perfect home. Thank you for the perfect stay

!!!!! DO NOT STAY HERE !!!!!!! !!!!! SCAM !!!!! This host is fully a scam artist and we are filing a formal complaint with AirBnB. Here is our story. We wanted a big house for my birthday party. Friends, family, a place we could gather, have a pinata and enjoy each others company and play some games. Hours before we checked in, we received an aggressive ransom message demanding $1,440 on top of the price we had already paid based on some odd calculation of guests and were threatened with a cancelation literally while we are getting our things together and coordinating carpools. The listing states a 30 guest occupation and never through our communication and booking did he state any additional charges for anything. Everything was clear from us, number of guests, numbers of cars, and fully agreed upon and paid for. All of a sudden, right before we check in, there was thousands of dollars demanded for guests exceeding some arbitrary number. It was a complete scam. Beyond that, the whole communication was so aggressive and he kept threatening us with how he could watch the on premise cameras. He obviously thought we would comply since we were hours away from check in and he had leverage. A lot of our guests didnt even come and we were well below max occupancy; we didnt even use most of the bedrooms. Check in was at 4, upon arrival he refused to give us the access code, again threatening, to get in until 5:30! He wouldnt answer our calls and just messaged us he wanted a guest count. Sleeps 30 and we maybe had 16, arriving at different times but all before 7pm. At 8:30pm, the sun barely gone down, while we were outside doing the pinata, an innocent childs game, he showed up unannounced and started telling us he had noise complaints and was visibly upset. 9pm was the time we were told that all outside activties needed to cease for noise reasons and the group must be inside, which we were fully respecting. He started ranting about underage drinking and rattling off all these weird concerns and acting very aggresive. We tried to calmly communicate, us being a group of adults with no guest under 26, but he wouldnt listen and kept ranting and felt threatening. Everyone was shocked and it was just bizarre. I've never seen an AirBnB host do this. He then proceeded to walk around the property taking photos and secretly locked up certain rooms, and was seen throwing things around; it was incredibly invasive. He also purposely didnt turn the hot tub on before we arrived as it has a long warm up time and then accused us of never informing him we would like to use it. It was so abusive and made everyone feel incredibly weird. It may be a moot point, but check in is at 4 and you cant be outside past 9, so the outside isnt even part of the experience for most of the stay. So many of the stipulations and descriptions on the rental page were suddenly laced with inconsistencies and strange twists. AND A RANSOM FOR MORE MONEY AND TREATING US LIKE WE WERE DEGENERATES HOSTING SOME CRAZY PARTY. We basically just sang songs inside most of the night, nothing crazy at all. There were mice in the house we discovered. Before checking out at 10am there were already people on the property cleaning or something. This host was really bizarre and made everyone uncomfortable and tried to take advantage of us where he thought he could leverage things for his financial benefit. It's obvious this host doesnt care about his guests and is trying to scam and scare them. horrible experience. We are filing multiple complaints. Nothing about this is as it seems.

Great for our large family reunion which included 13 adults and 8 children. The kids really loved the bunk bed room and the space to run around. The house, built in 1896, was charming and the grounds beautiful. Robert was very helpful and quick to respond to any questions we had.

Amazing jewel of a place. We rented this place for a family reunion. Rob was a fantastic host- great communication and helped us out throughout our stay. He made great recommendations for catered meals in the home as well as a photographer. The home is well stocked. The property is gorgeous and well maintained.
