Phoebe herself is charming. The apartment left a lot to be desired. The train whistles went on all night and esp at 5 and 6 a.m. The on-demand water heater was worn out and needed replacement (plumber said so). The stairs were very steep and were dangerously missing part of the single banister. The microwave was missing parts. Storage areas and closets were filled with the owner's goods. Three unwanted cots took up open space in the living area. The Black Pearl neighborhood is lovely, but this is on the very edge. We left after the first month of our two month lease. Our request for a refund due to unsatisfactory conditions was ignored.
Phoebe's house is wonderful. My friend and I stayed here for a month and it was a great experience. The room was clean and tidy, well equipped and Phoebe helped us a lot. It's also very convenient to Tulane University and the rest of New Orleans, I would recommend this place to others.
Our month at Phoebe's place was a pleasure from start to finish. The apartment is comfortably furnished and has a full kitchen, making it easy to have the occasional meal at home or take a day off from exploring altogether. There's a large welcoming patio for early morning coffee or late afternoon drinks, in the company of her sweet dog Fenn if you're lucky. The neighborhood is great -- modest but beautiful homes on tree-lined streets leading to St. Charles Ave, Audubon Park and the river levee, with lots of opportunities for walking. But the best part of the month (except maybe Jazz Fest) was getting to know Phoebe, whose family has a long, interesting history in NOLA. Conversations with her helped us understand the city better since she knows it as only a native can, making our visit a deeply personal one.
Our one month stay at Phoebe's place in NOLA'S Black Pearl area was fabulous. The space was ideal for the two of us ... comfortable, lovely, and a great location. Only two blocks away from the Mississippi River BikeTrail, we rode often. Walking, or biking, to the Audubon Park was so easy. We walked to great restaurants and music venues on Maple and Oak streets. We spent time on Tulane's amazing campus for the New Orleans Book Fest. The Streetcar, thankfully, was just a couple of blocks away. And best of all, we quickly grew to love Phoebe and her adorable little dog Fenn. We will return ... again and again!
Phoebe’s place is an example of what Airbnb used to be. As a guest, you are in her home that she loves and goes to great lengths to make comfortable with many personal touches. From the art on the walls, to the comfortable furnishings, fully stocked kitchen/ bathroom, and strong internet, it’s easy to call this place home. We stayed two months and loved every minute of it. The home is in the Black Pearl neighborhood, ask her why it’s called that, and there are many great restaurants, bars and stores within walking distance. Be sure to check out Maple and Oak street for dining options. Without a doubt, the next time we are looking for a month long stay in New Orleans, Phoebe’s place will be our first choice.
I am a native New Orleanian although I have lived on both the East and the West coasts for many years. I moved back home shortly after Katrina. I am a documentary filmmaker and civil rights activist. I love to cooking and eating New Orleans food. I have recently purchased this house in the neighborhood near the River Bend called the Black Pearl. I fell in love with it because of the great loft upstairs and the wonderful back yard. You can visit us at our foundation website: www.plessyandferguson.org. You will find info and photographs about places where we have put up plaques in locations of historic civil rights significance. I have been a Airbnb host, for almost two years now, and I am really enjoying it. I love sharing everything about New Orleans, especially the history and the food.
