Donald is the fourth generation of the Harms family to be dairying on this Century farm. The original 75 acre farm, located on Highway S in the Ironton township, was deeded to John Ludwig Harms in 1888 and has passed from father to son over the past 120 years. Donald purchased the present 260 acres from his parents, Gilbert & Florence, in 1978. In 1982, Donald married Dorothy Lins, and together they have operated Valley Springs Farm the past 30 years. Contour strips cropped in rotation of corn and alfalfa along with managing the natural nutrients of manure maintains fertile soils to produce the needed feedstuffs for their cattle. Attention to detail and a love for dairy cattle have helped them earn recognition as Sauk County’s highest production Holstein herd for several times in their dairy career. The herd consists of 60 Holstein cows and 60 heifers with nearly 1/2 of the herd Red & White Holstein or Red & White factored. Dorothy’s love of gardening and cooking was the initial start of living the dream of operating a bed & breakfast. As you enjoy the flower gardens decorating their farmstead or visit the vegetable garden & orchards to see what is in season, they are all a labor of love for Dorothy. She is certified as a Master Food Preserver so canning & freezing the garden produce is her specialty. Dorothy’s Homemade Delights (homemade jams & jellies) are available for purchase during your stay. Community involvement has played an integral part of their lives. They feel it is important to portray a positive image of agriculture to the general public. Don & Dorothy Harms have opened up their farm for tours, 4-H cattle judging and hosting the Farm/Art D-tour during Fermentation Fest. Don & Dorothy have both served on local ag co-operative boards, government, and served as 4-H leaders to local youth. In 2012, they were recognized as Reedsburg Butterfest King & Queen for their community leadership efforts.
