My girlfriend and I stayed with Carlos and his family for a night two weeks ago. It was my second stay with the Chaclans and it was again a wonderful experience (you can find my earlier review for specific information). I strongly suggest staying here anytime you plan to spend a day or two exploring the area between Lake Atitlan and Xela. You won't regret it.

Carlo's place was beautiful and a one of a kind experience. First of all, he contacted us the day before to plan our arrival and ask about any dietary restrictions. We took a 40 min bus ride on a chicken bus to meet him and then took a microbus with him for a couple of minutes. His house, land, and community are beautiful. The bed was really comfortable and warm. He showed us around his property and took us into town where he showed us important landmarks. The hospitality was everything I would want. They made us tea from their garden herbs because we were not feeling well when we arrived. At night they made us a traditional delicious Mayan dinner. They were so gracious and answered all of our questions about their community and way of life. We talked for a long time then I went to the patio to enjoy the stars and hammock. The next day they fed us a delicious breakfast and I was able to see his wife working on making traditional textiles. This is an experience that I would recommend to everyone! Totonicopan is of historical and political importance to Guatemala and I feel really lucky to have spent time there. I will never forget Carlos and his family's hospitality. When I am back in Guatemala I will be staying here again.

My stay with Carlos and his family was the highlight of my trip. I visited with a friend of mine and we were treated like family. I enjoyed being out of the city with clean air and quiet. Carlos and his family were so welcoming and shared so much of their way of life. We visited a local pottery and the nearby markets and we got to experience the day to day business of the local people. Carlos helped us navigate the local bus system and saw us off on the bus back to Antigua when we left. Carlos told us a lot about the farm, how his village governs itself, his hopes for his children, and the local stories. We shared delicious food prepared by his wife Carolina on a wood stove and he made us tea from his garden herbs. I recommend a stay with the Chaclan Garcia family to anyone who wants to dig a little deeper and really get a feel for the country and it's people.

The perfect place to discover real life in rural Guatemala. Not for those in search of luxury but perfect for travelers looking to learn about the cottage textile industry which supports many families in Totonicapan and ideal for visiting local markets Far from the classic tourist route, Carlos, Carolina, Heidi and elisio, lovely family, shared their home with us for four days, a unique experience.
