Midhurst has great historical social and political significance – Cowdray played host to both Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry VIII. Guy Fawkes once worked at the house, which later caused the Montague Family to be implicated in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Then, in the Civil War, the Parliamentarians used the house as a Roundhead barracks. Partially destroyed by fire in 1793, the magnificent ruins now tower over the town’s water meadows and visitors can explore where Kings and Queens of England once stood.

There’s an amazing array of places to eat in and around Midhurst. No matter whether you’re after low-key and informal or something rather smarter, you’re sure to find somewhere that fits the bill. There are a multitude of independent cafés and teashops as well as restaurants as well as plenty of local pubs.

Here the traditional country pub really comes in to its own – but think beyond conventional English pub grub or gastropubs. Instead expect gardens with great views of the Downs, cosy log fires in winter and landlords who keep great cellars and serve great food. The farmland of the South Downs is a fantastic resource so look out for plenty of locally sourced ingredients on the menus
Locally sourced ingredients are also a feature at the award-winning Cowdray Farm Shop & Café on the outskirts of Midhurst. In store there is a traditional butchery with much of the meat coming from the Cowdray Home Farm, a comprehensive deli counter with a range of artisan cheeses and a selection of charcuterie. It’s a 20 min walk from the flat through wonderful countryside.
Walk, Cycle, Ride
The walking trails around Midhurst are another great way to discover the local wildlife.
The Serpent Trail starts in Haslemere and snakes across the National Park past Petersfield, Midhurst and Petworth. The three-mile Woolbedding Walk offers a more leisurely stroll along the River Rother with its wetlands, dragonflies and even the occasional kingfisher.
For the more energetic, the South Downs Way is must. This iconic National Trail runs past the village of Cocking, just a few miles south of Midhurst, and offers walkers, horse riders and cyclists breath-taking, panoramic views of the countryside.
