Access is also possible via Bredasdorp. The name Malagas is probably an adaptation of the Portuguse mangas de velludo, “velvet sleeves”, referring to the cape gannet with its black-tipped wings. Malagas is described as a place of exceptional beauty and peacefulness and the southern bank of the River is lined with idyllic homes, framed by the Potberg Mountain range, many with their own jetty. Tidal action reaches 55km up-river and fishing kabeljou, grunter, leervis and steenbras is any fisherman’s delight. The river is renowned as the best estuary fishing location in the country. Malagas is a bird-watching paradise and African Fish Eagle, Cape Vulture, White Stork, Sunbird and Blue Crane are commonly sighted. The famous Whale Trail begins in the Potberg area and ends in De Hoop. The nostalgic pontoon ferry at Malagas operates from sunrise to sunset and is the last man-hauled pontoon cable ferry in South Africa. It is the only vehicular crossing to the Eastern bank in the area for further access to the Breede River mouth at Witsand. The pontoon will be replaced by end 2019 with an automated system.
Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a holiday near the water. The layout is perfect to accommodate families with children. The host was great with communication & very friendly. Will definitely be back!
We booked the house for my 60th birthday on the strength of the ad which stated and showed pics of a huge indoor fireplace and pizza oven. On arrival we were told that the pizza over doesn't work (it wasn't connected) and you could only make a small fireplace in the back corner as it needed an extractor fan to draw. A bugger when there's loadshedding as this doesn't work and you get smoked out!! If I had known all of this when I booked, I would not have booked the house at all. I ended up paying for 14 people for 6 days and after 2 freezing days of being asphyxiated from the fireplace (there was not other way to warm the house in 4 degree weather) 10 of my 14 guests left because they couldn't handle the cold. This included buying and taking food for 14 guests!! It completely spoiled my 60th birthday which I had taken ages planning.
