Be prepared to experience one of South Africa’s best community based accommodations. Living and interacting with the locals on the Transkei Wild Coast of South Africa is an experience not to be missed with various activities to choose from. If you are looking for 100% cotton linen and matching cutlery and crockery this is perhaps not the accommodation for you. However, a stay at Protea Ridge will be an experience filled with unforgettable memories. If you wish to book both cottages, please look out for a separate listing called Protea Ridge Home Stay - Cottage Kayelitsha 2 Roughly mid way between the closest coastal towns of Port Edward to the North and Port St Johns to the south lies Protea Ridge, a comfortable, community style, home-stay residence with the option of 2 side by side en-suite & self-catering cottages with huge shared verandah over-looking the village and Indian Ocean below. Set on its own unique escarpment, Protea Ridge overlooks the rural and friendly coastal hamlet of Ndengane, home of the local Pondo community. The owners of Protea Ridge have known many of the community members for most of their lives and in turn share a very open and integrated life with their Community. Fruit, vegetables and a variety of seafood and shellfish in season along with building materials, are traded throughout the year helping to contribute to our area’s “sustainability”. The “homestay” has been built entirely from local resources and many Kwandengane community members have contributed to the various stages of the building up of this unique accommodation set on the slopes overlooking this remarkable stretch of “untouched” Mpondopland. Community sleep-overs and meals can be arranged and evening “sundowners” in the local tavern make for a fun end to another incredible day spent on this remarkable stretch of Wild Coast. By prior arrangement, community “cultural” evenings with dancing and drumming can easily be arranged around the evening campfires at Protea Ridge. Clean borehole water pumped and stored in traditional concrete reservoirs supplies kitchens, bathrooms and garden taps whilst rain water is harvested from various rooftops for drinking. Come for a visit and feel free to “take your time” by foot, canoe, paraglider, bicycle, with your paintbrush or camera, or simply by yourself. Protea Ridge is the ideal place to base yourself, long term or short term, and the perfect springboard from where to explore this vast region and have the luxury of returning back to your warm and safe bed each night!

Marks place is a little oasis near the coast. We saw more than 30 different species of birds. Closest shop is in Lusikisiki, so come well prepared. We stayed at the place with our 8 month old baby for 4 nights but could have imagagined to stay for more days. We fully recommend a stay at this place!
Protea ridge is truly one of the coolest, funkiest places I’ve stayed. The eclectic decorations and incredible location make it extremely unique and enjoyable. Mark was super generous and helpful!
Its been an absolute magical experience to visit this airbnb! We were welcomed with smiles and opened arms on a property that was filled with many treasures and breath taking views of the ocean and the horizon! The plants and animals on the property all made our experience there that much more special. The host was knowledgeable about the surroudning areas, the staff and our neighbor were all super friendly and helpful too. Our accomodation was filled with character , a well equipped kitchen and a cozy warm flat throughout the storm and windy night ! I strongly reccomend this beautiful gem of a place.
Protea Ridge is such an incredible place! We stayed in Kayelitsha 1, which is a huge space with everything you need to have a comfortable stay and self cater, it also sleeps 4 guests! The whole property and the accommodations are decorated with props and collected items from the movie industry that Mark and Boris works in. We spent some time getting to know them and sharing stories of the beautiful surroundings and their work. They took us on a tour through their amazing property where they have other accommodations, we chatted for hours and ended up playing pool with them the one evening. The beach is a short drive away with unspoiled large beach to enjoy. The gorge and estuary where you can go for a paddle is right there, make sure to ask for paddles and do not miss out on that, it is absolutely breathtaking! The surrounding area is also just so beautiful to go for a drive. It’s quiet, unspoiled beauty! They are incredibly hosts and their place is an absolute must see! Make sure you stay at least 3 nights, as there’s so much to see that you will regret not staying longer, as we do, having stayed only 3 nights! There’s so much to say about this place and it’s all good! A special special place that we cannot wait to return to!
Protea Ridge homestay is an absolute gem. The hosts were superb, the food was to-die-for and the location could hardly be more perfect. The premises is set up like a small village, and our cottage was fully equipped for self-catering and stocked with bedding and towels. The creative folk who set it up come from a movie industry background and every corner of the property has magical decor and a museum-like feel in terms of the sheer variety of objects, both cultural/historical items and props. During our stay, we went on a plethora of adventures to various waterfalls, a canoeing expedition up the Msikaba river, a trip to the vulture colony, and various shore fishing trips where we were treated to the most magnificent sightings of both whales and pods of dolphins right along the rugged coastline. The birdwatching was superb too. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and I'm already looking forward to returning at the first possible opportunity.

Far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this one of a kind “homestay” is situated on the hills above the Indian Ocean just a short, exhilarating hike past various streams & waterfalls, cycads and proteas, & just over a kilometer from the famous Msikaba Vulture Colony, habited by upwards of 200 resident breading Cape Vulture pairs. The entire area is surrounded by prehistoric gorges & escarpments, crystal clear mountain streams and numerous valleys accessible only by foot and one can be forgiven for thinking you’re walking through “Lord of the Rings” country!
With its vast, natural rock gardens and various South African artists sculptures and art-works dotted around, Elityeni or Protea Ridge is a unique and one-of-a-kind destination on South Africa’s breathtaking Wild Coast.

My family has been travelling to the Wild Coast since the early 1900 and as my mother jokes, I was "made in Pondoland" , when my parents had their honey moon at Mkambati in 1966, the year I was born. Our establishment was started with my childhood friend Boris and is a family run business . We have grown Protea Ridge into a safe haven of bird life and a springboard from where one can explore this incredible enclave of Northern Pondoland. Boris, my wife Lynette and I have been working in the film industry for the last 3 decades and are the owners of Props to the Stars , a film props and set dressing hire facility in Cape Two , South Africa. We spend all our avilaibie time at Protea Ridge, to recharge our batteries and our children have both been visiting here since soon after birth. We pride ourselves at Protea Ridge with our close involvement with the surrounding community and live in mutual respect and support of one another.
