The Sanctuary, a hillside stone cottage overlooking the Gordana River with views of the Apennine National Park. Surrounded by nature and close to the slot canyon Giaredo. This cottage feels lost in the country yet only 7 minutes by car to the center of lovely Pontremoli for restaurants, shopping and the train station. Centrally located for day trips to Cinque Terre, Parma, Lucca and Florence. The private grounds feature a pool, fruit trees, walking paths, a patio with fireplace and a hot tub. This unique room is located under the house and has its own private entrance and small patio. It was the original wine cellar and is now a bedroom suite with arched stone ceiling, queen bed, sofa bed, electric fan, iron wall sconces, sitting area, en-suite bathroom, petrified wood fossil sink and walk-in shower. Its window with insect screen faces east for nice morning light. Stocked with blankets, sheets, extra pillows, towels, hairdryer and shower gel.

Great hosts, with plenty of ideas of things to do in the area. The house has lots of character and makes a perfect base for sightseeing or just relaxing around the natural pool. Breakfast was included which was a plus and We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Josh, Heather and Viggo were so welcoming and kind. They went beyond accommodating. I highly recommend the Sanctuary to everyone who wants a pure, beautiful experience of Italy. We will definitely go back.
If ever in doubt: GO! The kindest people we ever met doing Airbnb. The Sanctuary is the most beautiful gem in Toscany. It’s like a little paradise surrounded with olive trees, grape trees and every detail in the house is perfect and made with love. We had a lot planned like go hiking, go to the city etc. but we just stayed in the house and garden course it was so nice and the vibe was so good. The new fresh water pool was all we needed. Thanks to the warmness from Heather and Josh(and Little baby Viggo) we instantly felt like being home. Thanks for sharing your time and house with us. Lots of love - we will definitely come back.

Visit the old church across the field which locals say predates the 11th century and has a bell in its tower donated as a gift by a queen of Spain in the 1300's. Walk the trail down to the river for a swim or go all the way to the famous canyon, Stretti di Giaredo. River shoes recommended. You can choose to take advantage of our accessibility to many points of interest exploring all that Lunigiana has to offer and retreating to our peaceful setting at the end of a long day or simply stay put and relax enjoying the rustic common areas, warm lighting and beautiful outdoor spaces.
Taxi service is available from the house to town or the train station for about 13 euros one way.
You can travel to many locations in Italy and beyond from the train station.
Active folks can walk to and from town on a 2.5 mile (4 km) one way trek along paved roads.
Electric mountain bikes are available to rent in Pontremoli.

Welcome! Benvenuti! We are Josh, Heather, Viggo & Lucius- lovers of travel, art and nature. Thank you for considering our 4 bed/4 bath stone cottage for rent in Northern Tuscany. Our home away from home is a hillside destination situated on 2 acres in pristine orchards and vineyards near medieval towns, hilltop castles, the Via Francigena, the slot canyon Stretti di Giaredo (accessible via footpaths from our property), and the world renowned Cinque Terre. We are a 3 mile (4.7 km) drive or 2.5 mile (4 km) walk from the Medieval town, Pontremoli, which hosts the largest Medieval Festival- Medievalis- every August. Our location is also convenient to the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano. We welcome you to pick and enjoy fresh fruit from our trees, enjoy a glass of wine on our beautiful terrazza by a wood fire, or take in the stunning mountain vistas at sunset. We are accessible by foot, bicycle, car, taxi, and train, and closest to the Milan and Pisa airports. We can also arrange for your pick-up from the train station in Pontremoli and we have 2 bicycles available for your use. We look forward to meeting you and hope you enjoy your stay at The Sanctuary.
