EL Zapato is a delightful fun indoor/outdoorJeff Shelton home which has won many architectural awards. The third floor features a penthouse great-room and rooftop deck/living room with 360 degree views. There is a very private courtyard, free parking and the house is handicap accessible. (ADA Bath /one elevator) The apartment is designed by Jeff Shelton and a feels like Dr Seuss meets Gaudi- it will make you smile and is very FUN. It is walking distance to everything- leave your car and never drive while you visit. El Zapato is entered from the front door of the building and the inside unique staircase up is shared with the owner's unit , The Turquoise Penthouse on the third floor.
In a word: unique. We have stayed in a converted coal warehouse loft in Bologna, a yurt in Portland Oregon, and a fairy cottage near Mt Ranier, but this house that Carla commissioned by local architect Jeff Shelton was the most fun and most unusual by far. His Gaudi-esque terra cotta and tile buildings are one of the marvels of Santa Barbara and to be able to stay in one is a rare privilege. Pictures can’t really do it justice because every detail is carefully thought out - the iron work terraces and railings, the blown glass lighting fixtures, the whimsical tile patterns and vibrant colors. On top of all that, Carla was very communicative and informative - lots of info - and she had the best stocked kitchens ever: coffee, teas, spices, cookware, plates and glasses. Full linens and towels. Also, although the place has 3 floors, there’s an elevator - which worked out well for my 90 yo dad. Thanks, Carla!
The house is probably the most stylish place we have ever stayed. Very fun! Also easy access to the beach and State Street. Wonderful spot!
We had a great stay at Carla’s insanely stylish place. It looks as good as the pics and is a real local landmark. It was very comfortable and brilliantly located to access everything in central SB.
Carla's home was beautiful ! The space was perfect and has so much history. I had an amazing stay & would definitely be staying here again next time I'm in SB ! She was a wonderful host and communication was great :)
Carla was a wonderful host, with a beautiful unit, combined with a super location. The unit was better than described - very stylish and comfortable. It had everything that we needed to get settled in quickly. She got us setup with a small bed for our young one which worked out so well for us. The layout of the unit is great with the wide open patio/seating areas outdoors as well as the nice open living spaces indoors. The decor is unique and at the same time very homey. It was great to be surrounded by all the artwork. The bed was really nice and comfortable. The location was walking distance to the beach, wine tasting, great restaurants, and just a great area to explore.
South of Cota is an artsy neighborhood with Art for Scrap next door, the Community Arts Center a block away and a live art studio space across the street. Also we are surrounded by nonprofit organizations like Planned Parenthood so its a caring place as well. The farmers market is one short block away and in the opposite direction are numerous authentic Hispanic eateries. Not to mention all the wineries and art in the Funk Zone, (three blocks). And the beach ( 4 blocks) and all the shopping and theaters and restaurants of State Street. (three blocks). It is a walker's paradise. No need for a car at all once you arrive.
El Zapato is within walking distance of the Amtrak Station, the beach, State Street, only a block from the farmers market...free street parking all around us. Free private secure parking as well.

Hi I am a widow with two grown sons and I basicallly travel the world having cultural and educational adventures while managing El Zapato (which I come home to frequently). I live here when not in Maine or on the road....and if I am there when you visit, I would love to meet you. I am happy and healthy and so lucky to have wonderful family and friends and a magical house in a even more magical place in the world. The house is called El Zapato which means THE SHOE in Spanish because it looks like a shoe in the artist drawing ( Jeff Shelton). I also have a camper van called what else : RedShoe (on the license plate). I practice Red Shoe Living - always wear red shoes... Red Shoe Living: Live for today, be happy and give back as much as you can. Hope to see you at El Zapato... ok
