Philo is located in the picturesque wine region of Anderson Valley. In our area of Philo, you are very close to many great wineries and tasting rooms including Scharffenberger, Navarro Vineyards, Domain Anderson, and Roederer Estate just to name a few.
If you are not in the mood for wine tasting, you can take a beautiful drive out to the coast. Visit the town of Mendocino... Or take a fishing trip out of Fort Bragg.
Or just hike around the ranch and some of the logging roads that it adjoins.
Also close by is the famous Hendy Woods State Park where you can see virgin growth redwoods and take an easy stroll through a giant redwood forest floor.
There is plenty to do in Anderson Valley!

MARKETS
If you are coming from the Bay Area (the south) I would recommend making a grocery stop before you get too far north - a few good options:
WHOLE FOODS (Santa Rosa) at the Guerneville/Steele Lane exit off 101... It is west of the freeway, in the Coddingtown Mall.
OLIVER'S MARKET is a good alternative to Whole Foods... It is located in Windsor... Take the Central Windsor exit off 101. It is just west of the freeway.
Finally, the last good option is BIG JOHN'S MARKET in Healdsburg, just off the Dry Creek Road exit at the north end of Healdsburg. Big John’s is east of the freeway at the corner of Dry Creek and Healdsburg Avenue. Check on specific directions and open hours.
If you are arriving in Anderson Valley and HAVE NOT shopped, then you have options but they are few and their hours are limited.
ANDERSON VALLEY MARKET is in “central” Boonville. Also in Boonville is Boont Berry Farm. They are small and limited but generally stock more organic and healthy groceries. Finally, there is LEMON'S MARKET in Philo. Although this is about 1/4 mile NORTH of the Indian Creek turnoff, it is worth the stop if you are needing some supplies.
The Lemons own their own crabbing boat and their own fishing boat so often you will find the freshest catches of the season at Lemon’s. Call ahead and reserve crab... It can sell out fast during the season! Lemon’s also has the best sandwich deli-style counter in the valley. Again, check the hours of all the markets in Anderson Valley and don’t assume they are open at times you may expect!
COFFEE! The best (and pretty much, only) coffee shop/bakery in the valley is MOSSWOOD MARKET. You can be sure they are open the earliest in the valley and, if you ask nicely, they even can prepare you a small breakfast item like scrambled eggs and avocado. I like most of their baked goods and, a favorite of mine is picking up the chorizo and goat cheese empanadas during the day and heating them at the ranch the next morning. They sell out fast. Check hours, as always.
CHEESE! If you arrive during the day, stop at the south end of Boonville at Pennyroyal Farms. The experience is great and the cheese options are award winning. Stock up.
RESTAURANTS
So, the restaurant scene in Anderson Valley is limited but the handful of places have their merits.
IN BOONVILLE:
LAUREN'S serves good, clean, and relatively healthy but delicious food at LAUREN'S. The atmosphere is super casual and not as refined as the other options but, the family, unpretentious vibe and the affordable menu is a great option.
THE BOONVILLE HOTEL is probably the most notable for foodies visiting the valley. Owned and operated by John Schmidt (son of Sally and Don, who were the original creators of The French Laundry, the Boonville Hotel and its restaurant, TABLE 128 offer great menus, often prix fixe…. They have special nights of paella (generally Sunday) and other regular menus known to foodies who come to Boonville just for this experience. The atmosphere, while casual and not pretentious, is a definite step up from the more grass roots, Lauren’s, and it will be reflected in the price. It is not an “every night” place. CALL FOR DETAILS AND RESERVE IN ADVANCE.
IN PHILO (Closer to the ranch):
WICKSON is located nearly at the Indian Creek turnoff. It shares space with a number of tasting rooms and a small B&B called the Madrones, as well as the BOHEMIAN APOTHACARY (an upscale dispensary) Great food. A very small place so, especially if it is cold / rainy, plan on jamming into a small dining room. But, for summer and during the pandemic, there is plenty of outdoor seating.
THE COMPANY KITCHEN is the new player. They have transformed the space formerly occupied by Libby’s and the Poleeko Roadhouse in Philo. I have not eaten here yet but, it gets good reviews and, I would definitely recommend trying it. Like Wickson, it is certainly easy access from the ranch.
THE BEWILDERED PIG is located a bit further north. While their address says Philo, I always think of it as Navarro. It is at the old Floodgate location, where, in the early 80’s, Johnny Schmidt (Boonville Hotel) opened his first restaurant in the valley before moving to the hotel location. Again, while I have not eaten their yet, I KNOW it is great. The ride is a little windy so definitely have one of your party stay sober as your designated driver.
There are other options but not many. For breakfast, there is a pretty basic diner style place called the REDWOOD DRIVE-IN (shared with the Redwood Gas Station famous for its ridiculously high fuel prices)…. I can say though that their pancakes and MADE TO ORDER doughnuts are pretty special. The atmosphere is pretty sad though. I have seen Bar-B-Q being prepared outside on a big grill lately which, by the smell, is probably pretty great.
So, here is my recommendation…
- Do your main grocery shopping outside Anderson Valley
- Call Lemon’s Market in advance and get an update of the fresh seafood options
- Book a table one night at Wickson for a nice, close dinner out.
- Book a table at the Boonville Hotel for a nice dinner. Inquire about the menus and, don’t forget to ask if they still have paella on Sunday.
- After you are stuffed with the rich and delicious food at the hotel, at least have one night at Lauren’s to re-claim your digestion and enjoy some clean and un-finicky , comfort food. (Chicken pot pie on a cold night!).
- Pick up some baked goods at Mosswood for your stay.
- Pick up cheese at Pennyroyal Farms for your nightly sunset glass of wine
Remember, Anderson Valley is a tourist driven region so hours change and menus change based on the season. CALL AHEAD. I cannot keep up with the ever-changing hours of the local places. (ESPECIALLY WITH COVID! SOME PLACES NOW CLOSE THE KITCHEN BY 8PM!)

The ranch is high on the ridge between Philo and Boonville and far from any public transportation, so a car is key.
Philo is walkable (about 1.25 miles) where there is a small selections of essentials (a good market with deli, a good restaurant (The Company Kitchen), a post office, and a handful of tasting rooms...
Also walkable (About 1.25 miles) is the Madrones which offers Wickson, a great local restaurant, Bohemian Apothecary (An upscale dispensary), and a handful of tasting rooms.
There is a public transit route that passes through the valley but you should do your research.
The nearest commercial airport is Santa Rosa where there are rental cars available. Otherwise, the drive from San Francisco or Oakland is not terrible if you time it around traffic times.
