Gorgeous little cabin, very cosy with a comfy bed. The site is beautiful and in a great location. There's a hut that serves coffee and breakfast sandwiches by the river, and a bar/restaurant with a very good menu if you want to eat dinner on site. The website isn't up to date so be aware that the tipi is no longer there but they've done a great job of resurfacing the area. Also, be sure to bring a couple of camping chairs if you want to sit outside. Overall would definitely book again.
brilliant location. the hut was lovely, great communication with host. only small issue we had was the workers on site which we were unaware of, only was a slight issue in the morning.
Rosebud is a cute cabin and we were warmly welcomed by Eva on our arrival. Loved the cute touches with the tea lights and fire pit lit with marshmallows ready to toast.
Bishopthorpe is a beautiful village dating back to the 12th century, making it a perfect holiday destination just on the outskirts of York. York is a town steeped in history, founded by the Romans, occupied by the Vikings, a trading centre in medieval times, and a hub of the industrial revolution with important rail links and, importantly, chocolate factories! All of these changes are visible in the fabric of the town and in the many sites and museums you can visit during your stay. York also has a lively food scene with a huge range of both independent and well-known restaurants and cafes.
The boat is also a 20 minute walk from York racecourse where important race meets occur throughout the horse racing season, from May until October. The racecourse is also the site of one of the largest car boot sales in the area, where you can grab yourself a bargain every Saturday morning (apart from during race meets), early until around 1pm from late April until the end of October.
The village of Bishopthorpe itself is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the boat and is home to three pubs and a sports & social club, a small Co-operative supermarket, a butcher's, a bakery, a fish & chip shop, a newsagent's, a sandwich shop, a library, a pharmacy, a barber and a parish church. For a wider choice of shops and restaurants, the Designer Outlet shopping complex is 10 minutes drive away.
Bishopthorpe palace, the beautiful home of the archbishop of York, is a Grade I listed building visible from the embankment, though unfortunately it is not open to the public.
You can amble along the river path all the way to York city centre, a path also suitable for cycling if you have tyres with a little bit of tread! It is also possible to take bikes on the road, or the path alongside it, into York. On foot, it takes around one hour.
The drive into York city centre usually takes around 10 or 15 minutes. Taxis are easy to get hold of and cost about £9-11. Alternatively, buses to and from the village (bus stop 5 minutes walk from the houseboat) to York station leave every 30 minutes (every hour in the evening) and the trip takes around 25 minutes. They run until around 11pm.
