Thorpeness is every child's dream holiday with easy access to the beach and the Meare. The Meare is a boating lake with connections to J M Barrie's Peter Pan. You can discover the islands with a pirates den and dragon's lair along with other hidden treasures. The Dolphin and The Kitchen both provide food with local provenance and can provide takeaway. Heading along the coast, Aldeburgh has lots of different restaurants, cafes and bars and a busy High Street with lots of independent shops.
If you fancy doing more than simply enjoying the beach, Alexander House has views out onto the golf course which welcomes visitors and if you would like to play tennis the Country Club offers weekly membership.
Dragging yourself away from the beach there are lots of other places to explore in the local area. Further up the coast, the RSPB Wildlife Reserve at Minsmere is worth a visit. The coastal area sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are lots of footpaths to explore the heaths and coastland which make up this unique habitat. Or head beyond Aldeburgh towards Orford and discover the history of Orford Ness and explore the forests at Tunstall and Rendlesham. If you are a bit braver you could do this on horseback, setting out from Poplar Park in Hollesley to see the local countryside from horse back or heading down to Shingle Street.
​Aldeburgh is a short walk or drive away and has everything you could want from the wide open beach to the bustling high street. The high street offers a wonderful variety of independent shops, restaurants and art galleries. Be sure to stop by Aldeburgh Market for some fresh fish from their extensive fish counter or grab yourself some delicious cheeses from Slate. Of course no holiday in Aldeburgh is complete without a portion of famous Aldeburgh fish and chips. Other notable restaurants for a delicious supper by the sea include The Lighthouse and Seaspice.
Aldeburgh has a vibrant art and music scene, and is famous for being the home of composer Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears. Each year the Jubilee Hall hosts the Aldeburgh Literary Festival where guests can immerse themselves in a variety of extraordinary talks. Another event for the calendar is the Aldeburgh Festival which is held every June at nearby Snape Maltings. Snape Maltings has several performance venues, as well as independent shops, galleries and places to eat.
If you fancy venturing out a little further you will be spoiled for choice. The village of Orford has an impressive castle as well as being home to Orford Ness Nature Reserve which has a rather unusual history. Woodbridge is a splendid market on the banks of the river Deben and has a working tide mill - one of only two remaining in the UK.
