Really lovely campsite, clearly been refurbished recently and was beautiful, very close to York too! £11 taxi or you could probably get the bus. The shepards hut itself was very athletically pleasing but lacked a few amenities I.E no tea or coffee inside (in photos there is some) no running water other than up the strap stairs near the toilet so would be nice to have a tap nearer by. No corkscrew ! (Bought a bottle of wine but forgot the corkscrew) so this would have been appreciated. Just small things really as we would 100% look at staying here again we would just know to bring more things with us !
Really enjoyed our stay. It’s a great place to switch off and put the log fire on. We even had some Easter treats left for us on check in which was a lovely touch. Easy to get into York to explore. The on site cafe was great for morning coffee! We also had a wonder into the village and went to the local pubs which were also dog friendly.
We love this shepards hut especially the log fire. Kirriemuir is always there at the end of the phone if you need anything. Great location great cafe and great restaurant
Well what can I say! Lauren and the team were absolutely fantastic. They were so helpful, brought extra logs, showed us around the ark boat accommodation too and told us all about local attractions. The stay was perfect from start to finish. We were worried it may be cold in honey cabin with it being February but it was lovely and cosy warm with the oil radiator and log burner. All the finer details were included like games, hair dryer, cutlery, chopping board and the all important wine glasses! The bed was SO comfy with the most amazing soft pillows, throws and duvet. No expense on the decorations and furniture. Can’t wait to come back ! Thank you for making it so special.
Bishopthorpe is a beautiful village dating back to the 12th century, making it a perfect holiday destination just on the outskirts of York. York is a town steeped in history, founded by the Romans, occupied by the Vikings, a trading centre in medieval times, and a hub of the industrial revolution with important rail links and, importantly, chocolate factories! All of these changes are visible in the fabric of the town and in the many sites and museums you can visit during your stay. York also has a lively food scene with a huge range of both independent and well-known restaurants and cafes.
The boat is also a 20 minute walk from York racecourse where important race meets occur throughout the horse racing season, from May until October. The racecourse is also the site of one of the largest car boot sales in the area, where you can grab yourself a bargain every Saturday morning (apart from during race meets), early until around 1pm from late April until the end of October.
The village of Bishopthorpe itself is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the boat and is home to three pubs and a sports & social club, a small Co-operative supermarket, a butcher's, a bakery, a fish & chip shop, a newsagent's, a sandwich shop, a library, a pharmacy, a barber and a parish church. For a wider choice of shops and restaurants, the Designer Outlet shopping complex is 10 minutes drive away.
Bishopthorpe palace, the beautiful home of the archbishop of York, is a Grade I listed building visible from the embankment, though unfortunately it is not open to the public.
You can amble along the river path all the way to York city centre, a path also suitable for cycling if you have tyres with a little bit of tread! It is also possible to take bikes on the road, or the path alongside it, into York. On foot, it takes around one hour.
The drive into York city centre usually takes around 10 or 15 minutes. Taxis are easy to get hold of and cost about £9-11. Alternatively, buses to and from the village (bus stop 5 minutes walk from the houseboat) to York station leave every 30 minutes (every hour in the evening) and the trip takes around 25 minutes. They run until around 11pm.
