Nestled in the Otter Valley in the heart of Devon, just a smidge inland from Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton, Otterton is one of the county's best kept secrets... or so we think! A stay at The End at Barton House will give you the chance to explore the beautiful countryside all around: go in search of otters, beavers and saltmarsh birds, or simply enjoy the majesty of a clifftop view. The village has a dining pub, bakery, farm and community shops, so once you're here, you really needn't leave. The House Our historic farmhouse is the perfect retreat for those who want to enjoy the great outdoors without compromising on comfort. The distinctly Devonian, cosy accommodation contains two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one with a sumptuous cast iron bath, the other with a luxurious shower. Main bedroom The main bedroom overlooks the south-facing garden and has a king size bed, wardrobe and desk. The bookshelves contain some of our favourite reads - we hope you discover something you really enjoy. North East bedroom The North East bedroom has views of our magnificent village church, which sits on the site of a former monastery. It has a zip-and-link bed that can be arranged either as a Superking for couples or as twin singles. The cabin bed is perfect for curling up with a book or completing a puzzle. Bedding and towels All beds have pocket sprung mattresses. Our bedlinen and towels are made by Dip and Doze using organic, fairtrade cotton. Pillows and duvets, unless otherwise requested, are 100% cotton and filled with ethically-sourced duck and goose feather and down. Bathroom and shower room The upstairs bathroom houses a gorgeous, extra-wide and deep 1930's cast iron bath which is pure joy for those who like a soak, no matter how tall or small! Lie back and admire the 500-hundred year old oak crux that supported the original roof of the house. Downstairs you'll find a shower room with high pressure rainfall shower and a handheld rinser on a rail. Refillable shampoo, conditioner and shower gel from Faith in Nature is provided. Our ecological hand soap is from a local independent maker, Tappermade. Woodburner The new Dartmoor Baker Eco is easy to use and warms the space quickly. It has an oven on top, perfect for warming your scones or crumpets! We provide ample logs and can give you a quick tutorial on lighting it. Cooking The kitchen contains a rangemaster cooker with induction hob, a dishwasher, fridge freezer, kettle, toaster and a mocha pot espresso coffee maker and caffetiere. We provide ethically sourced tea and freshly ground coffee from local roasters. We will leave you a bottle of fresh, organic, local milk that you can top up from the 'milkomat' next door during your stay. Charlotte usually bakes something for guests' arrival - if you have any allergies, let us know. Laundry A washing machine is provided in the kitchen with various laundry detergents. Guests can use our tumbledryer on request. Hallways The hallway provides ample space to store walking boots and shoes, even park a pram (or use the woodshed). Garden The End gives onto the former farm yard, front garden and barns, and its sitting room overlooks the south-facing garden. You'll have access to these during your stay. In summer, the garden is a haven of flowers and wildlife, thanks to 'head gardener', Rupert's efforts. The covered barn is ideal for summer lunches and barbecues and is exclusively for your use during your stay. Children and babies We have a young family of our own so we can provide a high chair and travel cot, baby bath, small cutlery etc. Toys and a paddling pool can be provided for under 5s. We have an all-terrain pushchair in the shed that you can borrow for walks along the cycle routes or river paths. It goes through the gates and pedestrian bridges - just!
This is one of the nicest Air B&Bs we stayed in. In fact, it was nicer in real life than even the pictures portrayed. Charlotte and Rupert were perfect hosts…available but also discrete. Charlotte baked us the most delicious pie during our stay. The place was very well set up for us as we have a toggled and a 4 month old baby. The hosts lent us a cot and also a buggy which made life ten times easier when packing. We would definitely stay here again. 5/5
Charlotte and Ruppert are extremely welcoming hosts who are very eager to help. Easy to communicate with, they even lit the fire for our arrival. Give great recommendations on what to do. The house is beautifully decorated with an eye for detail. The location meets all expectations : quiet and private, yet next door to an amazing mill café, lots of walks, a pub and lovely towns around. Good for walking and jogging, the beaches are very nice- in any weather really. We shall be back.
This place is a real gem. Beautifully, thoughtfully furnished and presented. The owners have made it feel very homely but the finishes are top notch- gorgeous curtains and linens, lovely bathrooms, excellent lighting. Very cosy and warm in the autumn but I can imagine it would be a lovely spring or summer bolt hole too. We loved lighting the stove in the evening. Lovely village with lots to explore and see and do in the surrounding area. Would be a charming place to stay for a couple on a getaway or a small family looking for a memorable holiday in the English countryside. For me it offered comfort and warmth at the end of long days out in the open with comfortable beds, masses of hot water and an excellent kitchen for preparing home cooked food. And a comfy chair by the fire. I would happily return to Otterton and stay here again. Thank you Charlotte and Rupert.
We visit Otterton quite regulatly bu it was our first time at Barton End which is a lovely quaint cottage. Sofas and beds were all comfortable and the bathroom toiletries were divine. Charlotte and Rupert were great hosts.....and the home made cake was an added bonus!! Thank you
Otterton is a peaceful village that attracts nature lovers to its beautiful surroundings. It is served by bus routes towards the local towns of Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth and Sidmouth.
The walking route from Otterton to Budleigh Salterton along the banks of the River Otter is one of the most popular in East Devon. Up over the headland, you can join the South West coastal path, which takes walkers along the length of the stunning Jurassic Coast and beyond.
The neighbourhood has a lively dining pub and a community shop. The historic working water mill next door houses a popular farm shop with bakery, cafe and gallery, open daily.
The regency town of Sidmouth, with its theatre, cinema, galleries, shops and restaurants is accesible in just ten minutes via a picturesque coastal road. Budleigh Salterton is equally accessible by road and by foot, via the river path.
Whilst buses do serve the village, most visitors choose to travel by car if possible. Other than that, two feet or two wheels are a very popular second option and the main reason visitors come to our village.
Otterton is a popular destination for cyclists and walkers. You can access Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth by bicycle with hardly any on-road cycling. The back lane to Sidmouth presents a tough climb, but it's worth it for the views. Get a well-earned coffee and cake in town or cool off with a refreshing sea swim! Rupert is a keen and experienced road cyclist and will happily help with route planning.
For walkers, you can access the stunning 630-mile long South West coast path from the top of the village. For easier rambles, join the River Otter path less than 100 metres from our door and follow it in either direction along the higher or lower paths. Woodbury common, just a five minute drive away, is also a popular destination for circular walks; its pebblebed terrain makes it an ideal walking and jogging route year-round. Charlotte is happy to help you plan any walking or running excursions.
Parking for our guests is available during your stay in the driveway.
