One such luminary is Mary Grimstone, a novelist and poet, who was born in Beccles in 1796 and embarked on remarkable journeys to far-flung destinations like Hamburg and Australia. Mary Grimstone actively championed women's rights and her literary prowess drew comparisons to the esteemed Jane Austen.
Another prominent figure originating from Beccles is Sir John Leman, a tradesman born in 1544, who later rose to become Mayor of London in 1616.
