I had such a wonderful stay here. Basil herself is a treasure--so hospitable, friendly, and easy to talk to--and her property is extraordinary. It's right on the Meenachil!--or a tributary of it--at the back of the house. This is the river that's famous from the book The God of Small Things, and I came here specifically to read it on the verandah with coffee...it was heaven. Such a peaceful two days. And Basil is great at arranging any tuktuk or auto rides you may need, and the breakfast is fantastic. I hope to come back someday, and in the meantime, you should stay here!
The place was exactly as described and was very well maintained. Basil was a gracious host and arranged some really tasty food. Definitely recommend.
I throughly enjoyed my stay at the homestay. A beautiful old house with lots of charm, set in a tranquil setting far away from the hustle and bustle from other tourist places. Yet the close by areas like the backwaters are easily reached and perfect for a day trip whilst staying here. The location is quiet and peaceful, lots of greenery around and the accomodation is comfortable and clean. Basil always made sure that everything was at hand and offered such a delicious, freshly prepared breakfast every morning. A real treat! I had a wonderful, relaxing time at the homestay.
Stay at Basil’s home and having the chance to know her and the story behind her house was lovely. The surroundings are very peaceful, and the breakfast is just perfect! if you are looking for a quiet and calm place away from the crowded backwaters this is definitely the place
Basil's place in Aymanam was exactly what we wanted. Beautiful house, very well maintained, very calm. Basil was the perfect host, taking us through the 150 year old house and explained its history. It was the time we saw nilavara :) We went back to our childhood days plucking Rose water apples and mango from the trees( it was a new experience for our 3-year old). We had an awesome time and will definitely go back again !!

Hi! I am Basil. I live in Aymanam, a small village in Kerala, India made famous by Arundhati Roy’s ‘God of Small Things’. Brought up in East Africa (what is now Tanzania) I moved back to my roots in India in my teens to complete my higher education. Fast forward many years and I am now a retired high school teacher, enjoying a semi-retired life close to nature. I live in a separate bungalow in the same compound in which you will be staying. I am available onsite whenever my guest’s need me while not being in their space. The bungalow I live in is over 150 years old and is built in the traditional style of architecture used in Syrian Christian family homes, with exquisite wood work and a gabled roof. The space you will be renting as my guest is a newly renovated 2 bedroom bungalow. The building has been renovated without altering the spirit of the original architectural style but at the same time, incorporating modern amenities. The premises surrounding the residences has rich vegetation and is home to a variety of fruits and spices such as banana, coconut, jackfruit, guava, mango, mangosteen, pulasan, chikkoo, papaya, pepper, nutmeg, cloves etc. We are also blessed with a small meandering river that forms one of the boundaries of the property. I love meeting people from different parts of the world and I look forward to connecting with interesting people traveling to Kerala and hope to help each guest experience ‘Gods Own Country’ like a local.
