Our house is a small little chalet nestled in the woods on a private estate at the edge of the Exmoor National Park, and we find it the perfect antidote to city life in London. Cleeve Park was built in the early 60's on the grounds of Chapel Cleeve, a huge country pile dating back to medieval times, as holiday chalets. This is why they are quite small and modest but so beautifully located.
At the back of the garden, our sons love watching the West Somerset steam train pass through the pastures 6-12 times a day, the cows which graze in the several different fields, and after they've gone to bed, the grown ups will enjoy the west-facing sunsets over Black Hill.
One mile away is Blue Anchor beach for walks and a meal or tea at the Driftwood Café.
Dunster is 4 miles along the coast for exploring the National Trust castle and gardens, the medieval village of Dunster with many pubs and cafes along the cobbled streets as well as a fantastic playground for the littles.
Also, just a few miles away are the seaside town of Minehead (and Butlin's which offered day passes), Cleeve Abbey, Watchet and the Quantocks and Exmoor.

You do pretty much need a car in this part of the country, but for the intrepid (or those whose car is out of service like ours was last summer), there is a local bus service connecting Taunton to Minehead which stops in Bilbrook about a 1-1.5 mile walk away from Cleeve Park. The steam train runs from Blue Anchor to Minehead or to Bishops Lydeard, and if you're up for a big walk, you could walk to Blue Anchor station from Cleeve Park.
