The front of the home contains an expansive greenhouse, from where you can marvel at the most spectacular New Mexico sunrises and sunsets. Minimal light pollution and unobstructed views also make star gazing a favorite activity for our guests. Every plant you’ll find here in the greenhouse was hand selected to thrive in the optimal conditions of the Earthship's ecosystem. Plant aficionados may be able to identify tomatillos, aloe vera, and even a fig tree! Built to be off-the-grid, the Encounter perfectly utilizes the elements outside to make living possible. Solar panels collect energy from the hot New Mexico sun to power the entire home, and water for home use comes from filtered snowmelt and rain. The Encounter can even heat and cool itself using built-in design mechanisms (yup, no thermostat needed here). All you need to do is take part, and we’ll show you how to use the home to its fullest potential. Earthships also use byproducts of modern consumerism like tires, glass bottles, and aluminum cans, which are given new life by being turned into building materials. All of the water collected on the roof is used four times over, allowing the home to sustain itself completely without drawing water from the ground. So, while staying in the First Encounter, you are helping to reduce water waste and conserve energy all while enjoying modern amenities like wifi and a smartTV! A propane stove and fridge are available in the kitchen for those guests who would like to cook during their stay. In between meals, there are many historic heritage sites and tourist attractions nearby to enjoy your time in our wonderful town. Earthship living is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but we understand that it may not be for everyone. You’ll need to be conservative in your use of water and electricity, and be comfortable living close to nature and plants. While the wifi is strong, being off-the-grid means it can be slow at times. Desert nights can also be cooler so we suggest packing layers to stay comfortable. But if you do choose to stay with us, you will have the opportunity to experience some of the most spectacular views that New Mexico has to offer while doing your part to make the Earth greener.
