We spent an incredibly relaxing two weeks at Verracott. We've holidayed on lots of lovely Scottish islands but North Ronaldsay takes peace and quiet to another level. The sounds of nature and play of light on the island are amazing. Verracott has great views in all directions and is ideally located to be able to easily walk to anywhere on the island. The cottage is full of character, with artwork of the island, interesting books about Orkney and elsewhere, and fascinating info included about the cottage's history and architecture. Other major plus points are the two very cosy stoves inside, and the awesome sense of spaciousness right on your doorstep. A few points it might be useful to aware of. The loo is a bit of delicate creature - you might want to message the host if this might be of concern to you for any reason. The cottage has a beautiful traditonal flagstone roof but sadly this was slightly leaky on rainy days during our stay - wasn't a major inconvenience but might've been if it had been wetter weather - though we understand the host is actively looking at this. Although the cottage gets nearly 5 stars for cleanliness we found it wasn't as clean as you might expect, perhaps this was just a blip. Finally, the resident hens, endearing as they are, make it tricky to eat outside as they will jump up excitedly at any hint of potential food - we grew very fond of them but they did snatch a pain au chocolat off us on the day we arrived so just a heads up for anyone (like us) who isn't used to being around free range hens! Finally, Helga really is a superhost, very helpful, friendly and fast to respond to any enquiries. Our flight off the island was delayed several times due to thick fog and Helga couldn't have been more accomodating in helping us out. Overall, we'd definitely reccommend to others.

Really lovely place right in the middle of the island. Once the fires are burning the cottage is very cosy and warm. Sea views from almost every window :) Can’t recommend highly enough!

Verracott is a beautiful place to stay on an extraordinary island. The house itself is very comfortable and has good wifi while retaining many of the traditional features of an island house. We enjoyed the chickens who liked to follow us around outside the house. As to the island, we have seldom been anywhere where the people are so friendly and welcoming. There is plenty to see, and the beaches are stunning. We loved walking along a beach and being followed from some distance by a curious seal or two. We rented bikes, which were great for getting around the island, and enjoyed the North Ronaldsay mutton at the Bird Observatory cafe. A very memorable visit.

Verracott is a beautiful house on a fascinating, unique island. It’s situated perfectly in the middle of the island, with stunning sea views out of every window. The house is a perfect base to return to after a long day exploring, with a super cosy interior and log burners in the kitchen and the living room to warm yourself up next to. Helga is the perfect host, very accommodating, very kind and is quick to respond to any questions you might have. We had the most amazing time here and will miss it dearly!
