Birkdale/Birkenhead is traditional suburbia but safer and a little better off than most Auckland suburbs. Most of this area was constructed 50 years ago but with many in-fill houses built since. The main road in Birkenhead was been voted Auckland's friendliest community. Pedestrians usually acknowledge one another when passing on our street ~ maybe a memory of when North Shore Auckland was a collection of villages.
There are good eating places in Highbury, Birkenhead, Northcote and Glenfield: mostly cheap and ethnic.
In summer there is access to several swimming beaches.
Eskdale domain with its regenerating native bush is at your door but North Shore contains many other fine parks and bush reserves.

A great place to see Auckland's North Shore or use as a base to access the tourist spots north or west of Auckland. By car it is 15 minutes to the city (11km) and 5 minutes to the shops and eating places in Glenfield or Highbury or Northcote depending on which direction you travel.
There are reliable bus services to the city but the nearest bus stop is about 10 minutes' walk. A tourist alternative is to walk to the bus stop, take a 917 bus to Birkenhead ferry and then a ferry into the city. From the main city ferry terminal tourists can travel to nearby historic Devonport or out to Waiheke Island.
Travel to the city centre is best by either public transport or Uber. Beyond the city centre it is best to use your own vehicle because public transport is infrequent and sometimes slow. Use the Auckland Transport website.
