I moved to Norfolk over 20 years ago and settled in Reepham 12 years ago. I had always been fond of this sleepy little town with its market square and selection of traditional shops as well as its proximity to lovely walks and stunning beaches. I have brought my 2 children, now adults up here and I now can't imagine living anywhere else. The Stables had been derelict for many decades and in need of substantial repair. We used it for storage until sadly my dad passed away and he left me a little pot of gold. Dad loved old buildings and would have approved of his legacy being used to breathe new life into this old building and provide a little income for his daughter and grandchildren. Being in a conservation area and grade 2 listed I started by meeting with the conservationist to see what would be permitted. My aim was to create a comfortable, light, modern living space whilst preserving the old exterior for generations to come. It was literally back to basics as there was little apart from the wobbly 4 walls that could be kept with reinforcement. The stables were stripped back to these 4 walls and then tied in with new steel beams at first floor levels to give stability before the roof could come off. The roof has been supported by a steel ridge beam, rebuild and the original pan tiles re-laid. Then with a blank canvas the internal layout could commence. I wanted to keep it open and simple and light and airy so went for a neutral colour palate with plenty of windows and French doors to let in the natural light. Comfort was at the forefront so I invested in excellent quality furnishings such as a superking bed with a pocket sprung matress hand made in Yorkshire and a matress topper for even more comfort, egyption cotton and linen bedding, Nexpresso coffee maker with frother, large walk in shower, chairs with foot stools and large TV to name a few. There were lots of decisions to be made one of which was heat source. After much research I settled on electric from sustainable sources. Not the cheapest but the house is on oil which is not planet friendly. So, lashings of insulation have been put in to keep it cosy and as green as possible. Where possible I have used local trades people and products, supporting our lovely community. The paints come from Fenwick and Tilbrook https://www.fenwickandtilbrook.com, all household products & hand/body wash come from Koti Stores, Reepham's very own eco store. Reepham hardware have been a godsend and my children & friends have helped me along with way painting, shifting, puffing cushions with wine and tea to finish the project. Dad would be thrilled with what the kids and I have created and we chose Wykeham as it was his middle name.
