Radha cottage, your own retreat that dwells amidst nature's luxuriance, has a rich heritage that goes back almost a century ago. The first owner of this property was once the leading light of Indian Independence movement, Sir Pherozeshah Mehta. Being The 3rd president of Congress, fondly known as the Lion of Bombay, his statue now stands tall in front of the BMC headquarters, proudly overlooking the city he helped build and saw flourish as a global centre. The west-facing single-storey main bungalow is on the west-side of the plot with a narrow strip of foreground, an ancillary block to the south-east, and servants' houses set on terraces at different levels on a steep east-west slope. The main bungalow is simple, symmetrical in platform with a central living room, flanked by one bedroom on either side, a projecting room at the rear, and a full-length front verandah which also wraps around the building to the south. While the front verandah is enclosed, the side verandah is open with only piers and a parapet wall, and the hipped roof over the bungalow is intercepted centrally at the rear by a gable-ended projection over the jutting room and its front pitch is extended over the front verandah. The bungalow has China mosaic flooring, rectangular windows with glazed casement shutters, while the doors have timber-paneled shutters and glazed ventilators over the windows.
The hill which has a forest on its head, Matheran, is a name befitting this hill station, located at the very heart of nature. A serene town, secluded from the chaos of the urban life, and a haven to travellers who seek to connect with their roots. Not only does the town brim with greenery, but the main market here also caters to the thirst of shopaholics with its exquisite leather works. When the hunger strikes, one can relish lip-smacking local fast-foods like misal and vadapav, or grab a pack of savoury chikki to munch on the go.
Being a biodiversity hotspot and an eco-sensitive zone, Matheran provides a tranquil experience with zero honking and pollution, for it is strictly a non-vehicular zone. Matterhorn in Switzerland is the only other place which completely prohibits the use of private vehicles, so as to conserve the purity of the environment. This paved the way for the very interesting means of transport we can see here today. If you fancy horseback riding, you are in great luck! Many offer services for travellers to ride on horses and ponies in and around the town. Hand-pulled rickshaws is the other popular mean of commute, followed by the famous mini train, the rail of which runs through the lush jungle.
The town has a rich legacy and is a hub for colonial architecture and aesthetic. It is located at a height of 800mts which makes the weather here cool and pleasant. Blessed with an abundance of flora and fauna, it is a delight to wildlife enthusiasts, with each season offering its own special treats to the visitors!
